Is there a way to "cancel" Freeze Subdivision Levels?

Hi guys,

I have a mesh that I dynameshed and I clicked “Freeze subdivision levels” not really understanding what it does and now unfreezing it screws up my mesh (see pic).

I did find a work around by using GoZ to get the model to Maya, which I then deleted its history and exported it as an OBJ and reimported that OBJ as a ZTool but I was hoping for a faster way incase I ever made that mistake again.

Dynamesh with “Freeze Subdivision levels” still on:

After unchecking “Freeze Subdivision levels”.

Hello there,

It’s probably not the only method available, but clicking the ‘Make Polymesh 3d’ button will create a copy of the mesh in it’s current state (which means no subdivision levels / no history). It should be much quicker than GoZ’ing it for the same purpose.

Make PolyMesh3D is a Pro Tip. I never thought about doing that.

I don’t have too much experience with Freezing Subdivisions but there are a couple other things you could try if you run into this again. Make PolyMesh3D is probably still your best bet.

  • Freeze SubD remeshing seems to be governed by the same Project All settings in the subtool palette. You could fiddle with that to try to get a better projection when you toggle it off.

  • You could make a clone of your clean Dynamesh and then Un-Freeze SubDs on one. Then append the clean version and use ProjectAll to get your clean surface back.

  • Storing a Morph Target of your Dynamesh and then Restoring it after you Un-Freeze sorta works? It seems to be fine on the lowest SubD but when you go up levels it starts to break. Maybe with some smoothing it might be ok.

Hi I stumbled upon the same issue, froze the subdivision levels and then changed my mind wanting to take the subtool back from the beginning without the projection.

The solution I found is somewhat the same as the third one suggested by Nyx702 : Store a morph target, unfreeze the subdivision, then delete all the upper/lower levels, then morph back to the shape I got while frozen. If you want to keep finer details you can still duplicate the subtool, undo back to before freezing and use it to project back on the new one as desired.

Have a nice zDay everyone !!!
