i heard a lot of good things about Gnomon, is it worth attending their on campus full 2-3 year courses?
If you want to meet talented people and learn from some of the best in the industry, and have a bit of a bankroll, then yes. If you are talented, need money soon, and need a job to pay off the cost of the education within 3 years, then probably no.
As a practical college, it seems to be top notch. You go, you actually learn things, and they don’t accept every dolt that thinks they are an artist. As preparation for the workforce, pretty damn good as well.
So what is wrong? Most people in LA want to work in the film and television industry. These are among the lowest paying, soul sucking jobs out there for someone capable of completing something at Gnomon. If you are good enough to be the .5% that get to be who they want to be in Hollywood, then you probably don’t need any schooling at all. You can just learn everything on your own with your obsessive drive for skills development.
If you are not an outlier of success already in your life, it’s probably best to revaluate where the money is in art and animation these days. Medical, engineering, and product development are much more valuable places to position yourself. Your upward mobility (having shares, being an art director) to successful projects is very slim in the film industry. The internet has decentralized production, and thus countries previously impoverished by arbitrary borders can now compete with you, all without having to pay California living costs. Speaking Korean or Russian for example, and harnessing foreign intellectual resources is a much more valuable skill now than being a CG ninja and leveraging only yourself.
