Increase Alpha stamp rate for smooth Quick strokes!

While using the Dam_standard brush I noticed I would get dotting instead a smooth line if brushed too quickly …the stepping setting on Free Hand stroke on locked in Edit mode.

To Increase the Alpha stamp rate on Sculpting Brushes for smooth Quick strokes:
Turn on Lazy Mouse, Set LazySmooth 0, Set LazyRadius 1, and set LazyStep to a small non-zero number

When I left LazyStep @ 0.25 it worked wonderfully for the Sphere Brush, but for the Dam_standard brush I had to set LazyStep to 0.000067 for silky smooth Crests an Peaks

I noticed that if LazyStep is 0 it seems to disable Lazy Stepping. If you turn on Brush auto smooth on and Alpha AA with LazyStep set too small but not zero, ZBrush will lags-out and it might distort pen-pressure sensitivity …at least on my P4 system.

Thanks goes to Marsyas & spaceboy412 for passing this info. on to me.

I recently wanted to post this very question to the forums as i was doing quick strokes with my tablet and getting nasty circular ghosting effects… but I didn’t want to look like a n00b so I thaught it was my tablet settings. So i played around with them a bit and learnt a bit about what was going on. Then I started playing with lazymouse and came to the same conclusions that you did.

I then ALWAYS had lazymouse turned on and I thaught to myself that I was just using a trick to overcome a problem that could obviously be fixed somewhere else in the program. Apparently not.

I thaught I was breaking some sort of rule… but it just goes to show with Zbrush there almost isnt any rules!

indeed there is more than one way to skin a ZSphere (couldn’t resist)

I was dismayed with the slash brushes before I found out about this method.

ounce I turned on everything: Alpha AA, Accu Brush, auto brush smoothing, align to brush about 4, LazyMouse, now I can get the cleanest slashes I’ve even done.

I’m still at the intermediate-level and this method has opened up whole area for sculpting with Alphas, like Rolling Aphas for cloth sculpting too.

is there a way to make it so it loads this way every time? Seems like it would be rather tedious to have to constantly tweak this. Same with changing all the settings for each brush each session

Yes, you can …Lazy Mouse Setting are saved with a Brush. Brush, stroke, and Alpha pallet settings are all saved when saving a Brush.

I made a modification of Dam_standard brush I call Crest I could have it auto-load but I’m not sure If we’ll be installing a ZB soon and I like playing with LightBox.

By the way, I use a setup Macro that changes my Doc size to 800*800, clears the layer and sets render to Fast. its the only thing I found use for it however you could use this for your needs needs. I’m glade LightBox works with shortcuts which are very hand for getting around you Hard-Drive folders.
