I imported a mesh of a man and was trying to zoom in on the face with little success.i tried moving the entire mesh downward in the document window, but the gizmo dissapears at the bottom and i cant lower the mesh anymore.Then i tried making it bigger and lowering, but i keep loosing the transform gizmo.Any help appreciated.thjis is a great forum thanks.
Use the + and - keys and don’t forget the zoom palette.

Oh yeah, there is also moving the cursor up or down outside the gyro when in scale mode (Keyboard shortcut E) and there is also a way when in edit mode. Hold down the Alt key and click on the canvas (but not on the model) now don’t unclick…just let go of the alt button and drag the mouse…this to is a resize.
nothing to add , same method like with alt , but use shift if you want to move the object 
To move the model in edit mode, one doesn’t need to hold shift. But, shift does constrain though.
I also wanted to mention that the gyro and edit mode action are not a zoom but a resize…this is better then zoom in that is isn’t document resolution dependant…unlike + & -.

For all movment of Zoom in Edit mode, move the mouse + CTRL or “?” on the Icone the help in line appear ! All is explained

To zoom in and out of the canvas use the + and - keys (or the Zoom palette). To pan the canvas, hold down the spacebar while you click and drag with the mouse.
To scale a model larger and smaller while it’s in Edit mode, hold down the Alt key, click on the canvas, release Alt, and drag. To move the model, hold down the Alt key then click and drag.
