How to select front faces only?

Hi,

How can I select (Ctrl + Shift) the front faces only of an object? Eg, if I have a sphere and I Ctrl + Shift some polys with the lasso, the back side will also be selected. I only want to select the polys on the front.

Thanks.

I would view it from the side and use select rectangle. Get the axis plug-in script.

Yes, but if I want to make a selection as in the attached image, then it’s kinda difficult to do it sideways. I’ve been experimenting with masks, but they are too anti aliased and difficult to make exact selections that way.

You can’t select something that is hidden, so hide the back side first.

Ok, I hided the back half of the sphere. Now I was able to select the polys on the front I needed and hide them as well.

Now, I have the back half hidden, and a few polys on the front. But now I need to unhide the back half only. That doesn’t seem possible because the only thing I can do at this point is keep reversing the hidden and unhidden polys. Either way, the full back and the front will be missing. I only need the polys on the front to be hidden.

It seems such a simple task, yet so convoluted and difficult to accomplish.

I think I got it. Instead of the selection tool, I use the MaskLasso tool! I didn’t know about this. (although I still have to hide the back half of the sphere first…)
