How to quickly make many free-floating objects?

Is it possible to (quickly) sketch many free-floating object that act as one cohesive object, or do I need to manually create and layer multiple subtools. Here are a couple examples of the type of work I’m talking about by Sam Rolfes (I believe he is using ZBrush because in some pieces the zsphere frames are visible:

The first link looks like it might be possible using multiple subtools because there are only a few independent objects, but the second and third have so many small floating bits I can’t imagine how long it would take by that process. Is it possible in zbrush to quickly sketch multiple forms somehow?

You can do some of that using ZSketch. You need to draw onto something to get started - in myexample I appended a zsphere to the head and then drew on the head - but you can use Alt to delete parts and Shift to smooth.
