Hi, i was wondering if i can get a mask stroke as a line, line width defined by brush size? i made a crude example what i mean pls take a look.
I would try blurring the mask and shrinking it. That should correct the sharpness of the mask. Now do keep in mind the the overall resolution of the mask is highly dependent on the Subdivision of the surface of the subtool in question. For better alpha/mask resolution increase the sub D of the tool.
Hi gridlost, thnx for your answer but i’ve only put that image to explain what i was trying to ask. what i am trying to achive is that: maskcurve masks everything behind it but i want it to mask as a line stroke (and the line width defined with brush width). is it possible ?
Hi there,
you got plenty of possibilities doing what you want in zbrush.
As always.
But where??
First take the stroke pallette and place it on one side.
(If you know how to use the stroke pallette all I have to say is:
"Press CTRL while changing the stroke options and it will be done for the mask pen brush )
If not:
Press STRG on win to activate the mask brush.
Keep STRG pressed go to Stroke Pallette, click LazyMOuse + Backtrack + Line.
Click on your object, stroke the line first where you want to mask,
keep Left mouse button pressed and TRackback the green line.
Now you are masking a perfect straight line in brush size width.
On curved surfaces increase “Track curvature” and you can draw a straight mask line on a for i.e. sphere.
Play around with “Plane”, “Line” and so on.
(i.e. increase Lazystep while you are in Lazy mouse backtrack mode, and you are drawing regular dots instead of a line while backtracking.)
Of course always with STRG pressed to make the mask Pen brush active.
Next possibility
Uncheck backtrack and click curve mode (still STRG pressed )
Play around with all curve functions.
Basicly you can draw a curve (STRG pressed)
Change brush size and click on the curve to execute the mask.
Mask fades from 0 to 100 along your curve?
Check under curve modifier the intensity curve
If you now move the curve, it is continuously making below the curve, interresting effect, but I have no idea to stop this??
There are billions of possibilities once you get into masking combined with curve or Lazy Mouse Backtrack.
The Pixologic guys hide a real magic tool firework behind the stroke palette.
And I hope they take the curve tool on an even higher level in future.
Here are some pics for working with curve mode:
Check this to get into the Stroke fun, if you are not alredy there:

Best & have fun,

Btw. Export Screengrab without document pallet? Is there a hotkey?
Edit:
Ha ha ha,
change from “Freehand” to “DragDot” and you can move your mask with your curve without continuously masking. Use snapshot if you want to make multiple mask lines. You can change brush size inbetween.
Unchack “Bend” to not deform your curve. Sorry for boring all guys knowing this already from polypainting.
Me, I am very excited
No hotkey for that. Although, using “Print Screen” key on your keyboard will put an image of your desktop on the clipboard which you can paste into your 2D app.
Hi Knacki, thank you for your detailed answer. I was aware of masking with a curve but thinking about ergonomics, a maskcurve like function would be mush faster and reliable. I guess i will have to go with the way you pointed out for now. Thanks again.
So I don’t see your point.
It’s everything there what you asked for, faster than the curve you used on heavy meshes, better control, 95% more possibilities and with simple symmetry it is pretty reliable.
Put “Curve projection range” on high and have fun.
