How to gradient-fill an object?

Hi,

I’m trying to lay down a gradient in polypainting to have a start with the texturing. I’m talking about filling a model like this: grad.png

I couldn’t figure out how to make a directional gradient like this. Additionally, is it possible to do it with more than 2 colors?

Thanks in advance

You can use the main color and secondary color to do this with two colors:

  1. Select the main color and secondary color you want to use.
  2. Mask the parts of the model where you want the secondary color.
  3. Ctrl+click the model to blur the mask if you want.
  4. Press Color>FillObject Grad.

You can then add further colors if you want by masking the areas you don’t want to change, selecting a color and pressing Color>FillObject.

Oh, I see, thanks.

And is it then possible to overlay this gradient onto existing polypaint as well? Because now it fills it 100%, leaving any polypaint underneath it not visible. (Would have liked to have it as a base, but now that I already textured it I would like to try how it looks with a gradient). I don’t think it’s possible to have opacity/intensity lower when filling an object, right? Is there any other method to put one over the other? (Gradient over texture, or transparent texture over gradient)?

Fill should respect the rgb intensity.

As for the gradient, I’ve done these in the past using Projection Master (drop it down with the double sided and color options ticked, draw out whatever gradient colors and direction you desired, then pick it back up).

On some projects I would just save the gradient itself as an image. Then you can give the model a temporary set of UVs (Uvp/UV Planar), apply the gradient as a texture image, convert that to polypaint then delete the UVs (or restore the original set).

Just make the gradient on a new layer and adjust its opacity to get the fill you want.

Yes, as Bonnie2001 says, you can use layers to create the gradient or polypaint and then adjust the intensity to get the effect you are after. But you can’t use the FillObject buttons with layers, so you will need to mask and then apply one color, invert the mask and apply another.
