How to fix a assymmetrical mesh???

Hello,

I am trying to fix my model. After trying to smart resym my model i have discovered that my model is not perfectly symetrical (despite the fact that i have been able to work on it in symmetry mode). It basically says that no symmetry stored or somthing to that effect.

Anyways, i figured the only way to fix the model was cut the model in half in zbrush. Then import it into Maya to mirror it back together. however i am having several issues with this method.

The center line is quite messed up. I am able to get this lined up and mirror it in Maya at Sdiv 1. However, I lose all my higher subdivision levels - if i export and then import it at subd 1. However if i try to do this at sdiv 4 i get into alot of trouble. Since my center line is so screwed up, the tiny polys make it imposible to line up without messing up the geometry (overlapping etc).

Is there a workaround? I am looking for any possible solution here.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
mike

When using Smart ReSym in ZBrush, have you masked one half of the model or not? I’ve encountered cases where it gave an error if half the model wasn’t masked, but worked fine if half the model was masked.

The fact that your center line is off, though, might be the source of the problem. What you could do in such a case is export level 1 of your mesh, fix the center line in another app (without adding/removing/changing points) and then import it back into level 1 of your mesh. Smart ReSym will then most likely work.

Thank you for your reply Aurick!

Not only is my center line off but it turns out the mesh is not perfectly symmetrical. Also i damaged the one arm pretty bad by having part of it either masked or hidden.

My intentions were to make it symmetrical before retopologizing. My present solution that i am working on is to cut the model in half, fix the center line in Maya, and then either retopo in zbrush or maya (following Zack petroc’s example). Hopefully this goes smoothly

Is it a good idea to not have a center line? I think i remember cannedmushrooms mentioning that - just have polys in the centerline
Also i am trying to reduce the number of 3 and 5 way intersections to minimize pinching. Does a six way have the same issues? I am curios whether it is an even/odd thing.

Thank you again. I’ll see how this goes. i may need a bit more advice

Despite being at the beginning of the learning curve i already love digital sculpting (zbrush, that is) more than i ever did traditional sculpting. Much more fun and oriented to someone prone to error.

Hello,

I rotated my subtool and have since done a lot of work on it. When i try smart resym (with half masking and every attempt to realign the subtool) it states that 0 symmetry points are stored. Am i screwed?

Thanks,
