This is the same response you received from polycount, I’m just doubling up in case anyone with the same question finds their way here:
For something like the last image where the armor is covered with plate armor and other trimmings, uvs + surface noise should work out well enough. When the scales are not so nicely framed and you need the extra detail, you might want to look into using micromesh, or IMM (example scale brush)) to speed things up with actual geometry for each scale.
