How to change brush material without changing it for the whole ztool?

I’m embarrassed that I have to ask such a stupid question, but I have watched the zclassroom videos and then tried to find youtube videos that show the part where I went wrong but no luck.

Basically what I’m trying is painting different materials on the ztool, for example glossy lips or eyes. Whenever I change the material, it changes the whole thing though. So when I want a glossy material to paint with, the whole head is glossy.

I can’t see what they have done differently in the tutorial videos. I am on polypainting, I have it set to “M”, not “RGB” or “MRGB”.

Can someone give me a quick heads up what I’m doing wrong here? It’s getting frustrating. :o

Mask off areas to paint, invert mask if necessary. Sometimes is faster to mask whole object then erase where you want to paint. Make sure texture is off. Lots of posts related to this if you search.

You need to fill the object with material first. Then you will be able to paint with material:

  1. Select the subtool you want to add materials to.
  2. Make sure just ‘M’ is active at the top part of the UI. (Or the Draw palette ‘M’ button is the same.)
  3. Select a suitable base material. For a body this would be a flesh material such as SkinShade4.
  4. In the Color palette press ‘Fill Object’.

You will now be able to paint with material on your object. If you have already painted the lips etc. with color then make sure you have just the ‘M’ button on the paint with just material. If you have not painted with any color you can turn on the Mrgb button to paint with color and material at the same time.

HTH,

Thanks marcus, that did the trick!

Now the problem is that the edges of the painted on material look extremely sharp/harsh and the material seems strangely tinted. (I already painted the sculpt with rgb). I painted the head green, and now when I paint the lips with glossy material (just took some metal material because I couldn’t find anything wet looking) it is a very dark green with very harsh edges.

On the brown parts it’s a very wet-dark brown. This depends on the selected material though, some are just bright and chrome-y but the selected color doesn’t seem to influence it at all.

I’d love if you could point me in the right direction again, I’m sure this is the most silly oversight.
