How to add thickness to plane 3d object?

Hi guys,
maybe it’s a stupid question, but how to add thickness to an object created from Plane 3D primitive?

  1. I converted plane 3d to polymesh
  2. Divided subtool
  3. Painted with mask silhouette
  4. Hide and deleted unmasked polygons

So as a result i’ve got a subtool with required shape and zero thickness.
What steps should i perform to add thickness to an object?

Your next steps would be:

  1. Click ‘Clone’ (button beside Make Polymesh3D) to clone your plane object.
  2. In Subtool menu, click ‘Append’ and append a ZSphere.
  3. Select the ZSphere in the Subtool list to make it active.
  4. Go to Tool > Topology and click ‘Select Topo’ and select your plane (should be the only selectable object)
  5. Click ‘Edit Topology’ in Topology submenu.
  6. Adjust ‘Skin Thickness’ in Topology submenu and press ‘A’ key to see the result. Press ‘A’ key again if you want to adjust thickness some more.
  7. When you are happy with the result, go to Tool > Adaptive Skin and click ‘Make Adaptive Skin’. The skin will now be in your tool palette and will have the prefix "Skin_’. Select it to put it on the canvas.

Thanks a lot!

also you can store a Morph Target, use transpose to move your object forward a bit (which would be the thickness) and then hit make Morph Difference button, you’ll have a new tool that has thickness.

I’ll try this approach also, Thanx!

also, you can mask that formed plane and use the ‘extract’ at the bottom of the subtool pallet. There are controls that allow selections for thickness, edge and surface smoothness.

Ezra.

There is one more approach:
Thickness can be added in Shadowbox. This approach also allow to easily control edge sharpness and resolution of resulting mesh.

Tried this. Don’t know why but application hangs every time i press ‘Extract’ button.

That’s strange FairCat, I use the extract from planes that I’ve formed in every witch way all the time. I find that I can actually control the resulting extracted subtool resolution/size/smoothness even a little better better than I can in shadowbox.

Maybe you need to discuss the ‘freeze up when extracting’ with support.

Have you ever watched Pixologic’s Making Time For Art’ videos of the creation of the motorcycle. He uses the ‘extract from a masked part of a plane’ technique very effectively.

Ezra you right, it is strange. Extract works good with all other objects except current plane

Can you provide link for Making Time For Art? Thanx for help!

My apologies FairCat, I didn’t notice your last post requesting the link for the making time for Art tutorial for the motorcycle.

Here it is.

You may have already figured it out a this point but I’ve used the extract method for most of the parts of the truck I’m currently working on. I haven’t had any problems with it.

Good luck.

Ezra

Thank You, tutorial is still helpful)
