Hoodless Hunter (L4D2 Mod)

Hi all.

I wanted to share a mod I completed for Left 4 Dead 2.

The game mesh is 5730 polys with the high poly sculpt at 35 million. I used polypaint for the texture work, and I enabled layers for the blood (which was done mostly for the Exponent and Reflective layers.)

cool mod! as a L4D2 fan, i gotta give this a :+1:

did you use sss or bake it in?

SSS is only on the high quality render from Mental Ray. I chose not to bake any SSS into the texture map.

TOTTALY AWESOME left for dead one of the best games from this gen!

Out of curiosity, how did you create the spec map, specifically the blood’s spec? Is there an easy way of doing that once you’ve polypainted the blood on the skin texture, like masking by color, or is it all photoshop work?

AA-Ron - I painted a clean version of my model. Then I enabled layers and did a dirt pass, and a blood pass. Lastly I did a full white pass and placed that as the first layer so my blood would be on top of pure white. Then I exported my clean map, dirt (on white) and blood (on white) into PS and multiplied the layers.

Very cool technique, I’ve never used the layers for polypainting before but it looks like it certainly comes in handy. Ill have to keep that in mind. Cool stuff :+1:

Yeah, its new to Z4 and is a huge time saver for so many aspects of painting. Every project I did prior to this one I used to just make a save of my ZTL and polypaint on a clean model to get the different layers.

Hi there!

Fantastic model you have here!

I’m not a huge fan of zombies, but you nailed this one! I’d love to know a little more about your detailing process.

Could you tell me what brush (or brushes) and techiniques you used on:

  • The scratches over the eyes
  • The crackled skin on the left side of the mouth
  • The noise inside the mouth (and most other wounds)
  • The wrinkles on the chest, below the major sctatch lines

Thanks in advance and congrats on a cool work!

Sygnus - The major brushes I used were Standard, Clay, Clay Buildup, Dam Standard, Displace, Inflate, Rake, Slash1, Slash2, and of course, Smooth. (The painting was done with Standard and Pen Wet)

The scratches over the eyes, and really any deep claw style cut was done with the Slash1 brush. I’d make a cut, then smooth it over a bit. Smoothing helped because it will pull open the wound more.
The crackled skin and the wrinkles on the chest were done with the Displace brush, DragRect, and an alpha map. My alphas were mostly gathered from Aaron Sims Zbrush Alpha Library.
The noise in the mouth, and most of the open wounds were done with the Clay Buildup, Color Spray, Alpha 08. I’d build up some really lump skin, then smooth it down, and repeat with differing depth intensities. Then depending on the wound, I would add some bumpy or leathery skin alphas over it, and again, repeat.
