High Contrast and Overshadowed Interface issue

I’ve been getting into ZBrush more and more, as I realized it’s the easiest way to conceptualize my ideas.

For the past two weeks or so, I’ve used ZBrush every day for at least five hours at a time, and I’ve never had this problem until now.

Having loaded up ZBrush, I noticed that the contrast of the interface and everything on the screen seemed to be extremely low. Also, the object on screen (Default sphere) was shadowed so much that you could see no lower than about a third of the way down the sphere itself. You know how normally, the sphere/object on screen is shadowed in such a fashion that you can see the highlighted part, the midtone part, and the lightly shadowed part? And how you could actually see the whole object with no obstruction? Well, for some reason, I’m having problems with that.

I opened the materials panel, and every material was over shadowed as well. For example, I use mainly Basic Material 2 (if that’s what it’s called) and Colorizer 3 for sculpting (or Bump Viewer). The sculpt itself was shadowed so much that it looked like the object was emerging from a pitch black alleyway and a bit of light was reflecting off of it. You couldn’t see some parts of it.

I’ve already checked my computer screen settings, and tried adjusting colors. Also, I checked the screen brightness and then tried resetting, which ever so slightly alleviated the problem.

ALSO, the interface itself seemed to be extremely dark and contrasted. I changed the presets a few times, but they also seemed dark.

If anyone can help me fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. I’m not sure if you know this, but it’s REALLY hard to sculpt areas where you can’t see  .

On a note, I was feeling extremely tired and out of it, so that may have had something to do with it. I’ll check again later on when I can, and see if anything’s changed.

If you’ve confirmed 100% that the problem does not exist in your display or your display driver, and that it only occurs in ZBrush, then I would suggest giving Pixologic a call. They’ll probably start you off by asking you to restore the standard UI. If that doesn’t work they’ll most likely recommend you uninstall and reinstall ZBrush.

The first thing to try is renaming your UICustom.cfg file. If that fixes it, then you’ll know that your problem is in one of the custom settings. If you have a startup document you may want to try disabling that as well.

Thanks for the suggestions both of you. I’ll try them ASAP

I thought I should post an update. I checked everywhere to see if there were issues. On startup, everything was normal, and when everything was finished loading, the contrast would instantly shoot down. So, I checked the display and drivers, and I’m not sure how I missed my (I think) ATI Display driver, in which someone had tweaked with the color settings and messed up the curves and whatnot. Well, I set it back to default, and everything’s back to normal. So thanks for your help guys!!
