Help exporting to Substance painter - "Mesh normals are invalid" error

Hi. Relative newbie here. Thanks so much for any assistance, I’m pulling what is left of my hair out with this issue. :haircut_man:

ISSUE:

I’m attempting to export some characters I’ve made in zbrush so I can paint / texture them in substance painter.

When I import them into substance however I get a consistent error that occurs, then substance crashes. This happens with virtually all models I try to import.

MY METHOD:

I’m outputting from zbrush as an FBX, having decimated the models. The characters started at around 2-3 million polys. They are then decimated at 250k, and their clothing elements at 20k. Fbx file size ends up around 250mb.

Here are the fbx export settings:

I’m using the ones shown on an example Youtube tutorial I found.

When I import into substance, this is what I get:
Stuck here:
stuck stage
Error message:

Substance import settings:
import settings1
import settings 2

I realise this may be an error with substance - however on substance forums I’ve read, the belief seems to be that the issue is with the model and the data being provided during export somehow, so posting here to see if anyone has a clue.

Thanks so much for your help. I love zbrush and really hope I can crack this.

:pray:

Cheers
Billy

Hello @billy_mac_22 ,

It sounds like there may be some sort of issue with the mesh geometry. Be sure to check in for errors with Tool> Geometry> Mesh Integrity> Check Mesh. When viewing the model, make sure that Tool> Display properties> Double is OFF. This will let you more easily see issues with the normal facing.

Otherwise, to investigate this please contact Support and provide the file for examination. We aren’t able to assist you in that capacity over the public forums.

Thank you!
