Handling various screens aspect ratio

Hello

I recently decided to upgrade my 17" monitor to 19", since I’d like to have a larger working area for Photoshop and Zbrush.

After hesitating, I decided to get a CRT monitor instead of a LCD one. But there is still a problem that seems difficult to solve. Indeed, many people use a resolution of 1280x1024, both on CRT and LCD 19" monitors. But this resolution is not 4:3, it’s rather 5:4. I tried to view one of my images in this resolution, and the characters of the picture seem “squashed”, with non correct proportions.

17" owners generally use 1024x768 and 21" offer 1600x1200 which are both 4:3 ratio. So this intermediate 5:4 ratio for 19" is rather strange and can generate some problems when designing/viewing images, no? I suppose some of you use this 1280x1024 resolution, and I wanted to know how you avoid this aspect ratio problem (if you do).

Thank you very much for your reply!

…for Windows in the Menu “Panneau de configuration” / “Affichage” you have a section where you can change the Resolution of the Pixels like 96 DPI (for Pc Screen) or 72 (for Mac) or any numbers that you want
Is that resolve your problem ?

Hello Pilou, thanks for your reply.

Unfortunatly, I don’t think that’s the problem. I’m more talking about width/height ratio. 1024*768 resolution has a 1.3333 ratio (4:3). 1600x1200 too. But 1280x1024 has a width/height ratio of 1.25 (5:4). So on a same square surface, a picture displayed in 1280x1024 won’t have the same vertical proportions as on 1024x768 and will appear a bit squashed. I think there is no real solution, except making monitors that are taller than wider, but I don’t think it’s the case.

That’s why I wanted to know how graphic designers were handling this issue in order to keep the right proportions if they work in a 1280x1024 resolution.

I hope I’m clear

On Screen Display = OSD

Seems you must regulate on The screen Monitor with the buttons !
It’s ok Now ?

Heh Pilou, you’re a champ, thanks a lot!

Pilou 16/9

The pixels are square, so using different ratios shouldn’t stretch your monitor pixels at all. Unless you’re trying to fit a 1024 X 768 desktop image to a 1280 X 1024 desktop. Then the image itself will be stretched. But everything else should be fine.

Hmm, Chad you’re right, the pixels are square on an LCD. But on a CRT, they aren’t (at least as far as know). But indeed, since they are square on an LCD, I suppose the monitor dimensions are fitting this ratio.
