First try of modelling: theropod dinosaur

Hello everybody! I’m new here and I’m new with ZBrush. This is my first try to sculpt something, a theropod dinosaur; I’ve used ZSpheres to model it.

It’s still a WIP, but I don’t know how to continue with it, despite it need a lot of work, and I need to add the eyes and more texture to the skin (wrinkles, scales, etc…)
If anybody here could give me some advices to improve it, I’ll be very glad.
Thanks!

Hello and welcome to ZBrushCentral!

I think this is a very good start. Perhaps you should make the lower part of the arms a bit longer and thinner. And I think there should be four fingers…

:+1: :+1: :+1:

Thanks!! I’ve modified the arms, and I’ve added a little bump instead of a 4th finger, because it was an old character that they lost progressive.

Here is an update. I’m not happy with the teeth and the skin need more work, but I think it doesn’t look very bad:rolleyes: .
BTW when I work on the head, the resolution is bad and appears some strange polys (for example, look around the eyes), why? and there is any way to avoid that?
Thanks!

Good progress!

The arms look real nice now. :+1:

You could subdivide the region around the eyes:
First press SHIFT + CTRL and draw a mask around the eyes.
Then go to Tool -> Geometry and press Subdivide.

After that you have more polys in that region and the problems should be gone.
(And don’t forget to use the smooth-brush. )

I know that this going to sound silly, but… I can’t find the Divide button
Here is a screen print of my Tool palette with Geometry opened.

BTW, I’m working with Adaptative skin level 6, that’s matter to the problem?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you have to convert the ZSpheres to an adaptive skin, before this method works… :o

I think the problem is that you have not enough polys in the eye-area.
Even at level 6 or above there can still be some areas were are not enough polys to give a good result.

If you use the subdivide-method, you can add polys only to the selected areas, instead of adding more polys to the whole mesh (higher skin level)…

If you want to keep the ZSpheres you can try to add additional ZSpheres to the head.

One more thing:

You should try to enable smoothing under Display Properties and disable Quick 3D edit. I think this could help.

Thanks! it worked!!
Now I’m a little lost, I want to texture it and add the eyeballs and more details (scales and feathers) but I don’t know how yet  .

I’m glad I could help you.

Here is a good tutorial about texturing and detailing a dinosaur:

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=21891

By the way, I didn’t know that this kind of dino got any feathers…

Thanks for the link! I’ll follow that tutorial ^^.
Oh, and about the feathers,my model isn’t any dino in particular, just a “tipical” theropod, and since many small theropods had feathers, I would like to add some on it, like a kind of fuzz or fur, just to learn how can I make “feathers” in Zbrush.

BTW, at the same time, I’ve started my second model: Indricotherium, the biggest land mammal.

Another great model!

I love your prehistoric animals.

Can’t wait to see a textured version.

So, what’s your next model? I would suggest a Triceratops.
