Hello to all!
Hola a todos!
My first post with an almost finished work. Most of you will know the original painting from Arnold Böcklin, a swiss painter. This painting has fascinated and almost obsessed me since the first time I saw it. I’m making an animation out it, the first part is also almost finished. If someone is interested in viewing the 38 second animation I will post a link to it when I have finished it.
I used ZBrush for the modelling and the texturing of the isle and the cypresses. Boot and figures were made in 3ds max, with an extensive use of the cloth plugin. All rendered in max whith the standard scanline renderer.
Working with ZBrush was a great pleasure. I often thought for myself:" That’s the way a 3d programm should be!" Nothing to compare with some other programms, which I don`t want to name.
Hope you like “Die Toteninsel”.

nice work! love it! i’m interested in the animation c’mon gimmi link
Many thanks for your kind comment pooop. In about a week I will link the rendered animation with sound (music from Max Reger also titled “Die Toteninsel”).
looks greatsmall_orange_diamond
- but I’d love to see it larger some of the detail is blocking in.
I thought that looked strangely familiar to an HR Giger painting, and I was right. He actually did one called “No. 350, Hommage a Böcklin”… obviously in his own style. Any plans on doing a twisted Giger-esque version?
@ all: many thanks for your comments!
@ Frenchy Pilou, your link was really very interesting, a lot of original versions. I will als upload also my version to your thread.
@ boozie floozie: here`s the larger version you wanted to see.

Has anyone an advice for modeling the cypresses?

Try doing a search for trees - you’ll find many examples of creating vegetation and foliage etc using zbrush and also some cool materials. Some people also import high rez plants into zbrush. You could also try experimenting with the use of the fibre material and fibre brushes for foliage which is not seen in close-up.
Remember as well as using modelled foliage you could also use alphas on basic shapes to create a foliage cut-out fx.
A little link about Böcklin
Sven Beckman has made an animation in the past with the isle of the dead
Alas seems the link is broken:(
Hehe I refound something
Look the last line of this
link
But alas the movie don’t works
Thank you for the tips Mark, and also to you Frenchy Pilou,.iI was in fact a pity that the link didn`t work.
By the way, the background music of the page is “a little bit” in contrast to the painting of Böcklin.
@Pooop: It has taken longer than I wanted, but at last, here is the link to a 40 sec. animation of the death isle. Music is from Max Reger. He composed the music after seeing the painting from Böcklin.
Of course the link is for all interested people. I hope it works; its my first link to esnips.

Every artist meets his fate, or, in other words: Böcklin’s Toteninsel. You are courageous to tackle such a charged and recogniseable subject. But then again: how many know the Böcklin suite, let alone Max Reger?
This said: did you ever hear Rachmaninov’s interpretation?
Thanks for your reply Aeneas; no, I haven’t heard till now the interpretation of Rachmaninov, but I will surely do it soon.
I forgot to write that I really like your effort.
This said: Böcklin painted several versions and some are quite different from others. I personally prefer the version that can be seen in Berlin. And Giger’s of course. One would almost say it’s a pity he’s happy now, so that he doesn’t paint anymore. It may save him Beksinski’s fate…
Almost two years later, time…, a new version:
I added more detail, and worked a lot with normal maps.
Hola Juan,
