[update: just changed the ad copy – wasn’t trying to bump it back into the thumbnails :D]
This was inspired by the topic of stencil-based masks [in 3d edit mode] and Aurick’s tutorial on stencil-based deformations, but it doesn’t use stencils
To emboss or engrave lettering or a design onto another object with Global Perspective, here is a pretty simple method IF you are only creating an image and are not trying to save or export a 3d mesh – it uses Alpha->Make3d
[note: not really embossing onto another object, it’s going onto pixols that have already been snapshot to the canvas]
:large_orange_diamond: Prepare a white-on-black image that contains your lettering or design
:large_orange_diamond: Set a global perspective point by shift-dragging from the Perspective Distortion Slider (in Draw Palette) to the canvas [note: this is only available if the active tool is a 3d tool]
:large_orange_diamond: Before drawing the main object, shift-click the Perspective button in the Draw palette to turn on Global Perspective for that tool
:large_orange_diamond: After dropping the main object to the canvas, import the B&W image into the Alpha Palette
:large_orange_diamond: Still in Alpha palette, set Blur, Noise and Radial fade to 0, and MaximizeRange On
:large_orange_diamond: Adjust Mesh Resolution, Depth and Smoothing, then press Make3d -- this will make a new 3d tool based on the alpha image, and will make it the active tool
:large_orange_diamond: Shift-click on Perspective button in Draw palette so that Global Perspective is also active for this tool (each 3d tool remembers its own perspective setting)
:large_orange_diamond: Draw with this on top of pixolized main object, with either ZAdd or ZCut -- adjust with Scale (E), Move (W) and Rotate (R) until it looks right -- hey, it's not a perfect method, you have to do part of it by eye :D
:large_orange_diamond: Adjust color, texture and material of Alpha-3d object before dropping it to canvas
Improvements and corrections are welcome!
