Dynamic brush size turns on everytime snake hook is selected

When I use snake hook, dynamic brush size is turned on. I turn it off, use the brush, then use a different brush for a bit, return to snake hook, and dynamic brush size is turned on again. Is this a new feature, or is there a way I can turn it off, and keep it off?

Hello @ReplicA63

Make sure that “Remember Dynamic Mode Per Brush” is turned on. This is located next to the DrawSize slider on the default UI or in Preferences: Draw. This should be enabled by default in the current version of the program.

Then, switch off Dynamic mode for the Snakehook brush by double clicking on the “Dynamic” toggle in the DrawSize slider. Switch to another brush for which Dynamic should still be active, and then back to the SnakeHook brush. Take care that you are not instead selecting another similarly named brush. The Dynamic mode should remain off for that brush.

However, it appears as if the warning about using Sculptris Pro with the Snakehook brush resets this status, so if you disable Sculptris Pro then switch back to the Snakehook brush you will also have to reset Dynamic mode. I have made a note of this to the Development team. Once you disable the warning, it shouldnt happen again for that session.

Thanks for the reply.

I made sure that “Remember Dynamic Mode Per Brush” was enabled, stored config, restarted, then checked for any changes, and it’s still happening. It’s only happening to the snake hook brush so far.

I noticed the new sculptris pro notification when selecting snake hook on a new zbrush session, which I thought was weird. Why do we need another notification for something like this? Whatever…

I can now confirm what you report. The Snake brushes will not retain their Dynamic setting if Sculptris Pro is disabled, even if the warning is suppressed. I have forwarded this to Development for attention.

The reason for the Sculptris Pro warning is that the performance of the Snake brushes without Sculptris Pro enabled will tend to cause ugly polygon stretching for the user that can be mistaken for some sort of technical issue, and Sculptris Pro mode is a global setting. It is not currently possible to just enable it for one brush and not all the others as well. This message informs the user that unlike other brushes that perform well in either mode, these brushes are specifically designed to be used with that feature, and they will need to enable it for the best results.

Thank you!

I updated to the latest version, with the bug fix for this issue, and it still exists for me. The only change now is, all brushes start with dynamic size, that I have to turn off, one by one. Snake hook is still turning dynamic sizing back on every time I select it.

Would a reinstall help? At this point it really seems like it’s something on my end.

So any word on this? Is there something I can do, or am I just unlucky?

Since it appears Spyndel is done with this issue, even though I’m not, I thought I’d take a second to let anyone who trips across this problem, know what I did as a workaround.

I ran the updater again, and it seems like the update install didn’t take the first time. Now, when I disable dynamic brush sizing, it stays disabled. There’s still the issue of dynamic brush size being on by default for all brushes. So every time I open zbrush, I now have to disable dynamic size, brush by brush. Tried saving config, and that didn’t work. But at least I don’t have to do it over and over again for a single brush.

This issue was corrected in 2022.0.2. My testing indicates it’s working as expected on Windows.

Dynamic mode is the preferred mode for brushes, and required by some.

If “Remember Dynamic Mode per Brush” is on when the Snakehook brush is first selected in the program, then it will load with Dynamic mode active and will need to be deactivated, at which point it should remember that setting for the rest of the section.

If “Remember Dynamic Mode per Brush” is OFF when the Snakehook brush is first selected, and Dynamic brush mode has been switched off, it will load with Dynamic mode off.

If you’d like to switch off Dynamic Mode globally for every brush in the program by default, disable “Remember Dynamic Mode per Brush” , and disable Dynamic brush mode. Then store the config (Preferences> Config> Store Config), and restart the program.

Oh good, you are still here. I was about to get concerned.

As I said earlier, I corrected the issue with a reinstall of the update, and got it working correctly. So yeah, the problem was on my side, so lucky I guessed that solution.

Thank you for the run down of how to correct this issue, since dynamic mode is absolutely not preferred by me in most instances.
