DPI in saved images

Can you decide what dpi your rendered picture will save at. i want to import the images into Photshop where I work at 300dpi.

Holly-molly! Colin Thompson! The book author and illustrator! Wow! I’ve come across a few of your books, Ahh, “Looking for Alantis”, and another one, Ah! “How to live forever”. I’ve just checked out your website, and its REALLY nice!

It would be really good if you got into using ZBrush, as a Childrens book made with ZBrush would be incredible! (not to mention fine publicity for Pixologic). If you need a hand just sing out and I’m sure EVERYONE here will go out of there way to help you.

Oh, and as for your question … No. ZBrush is only 72 DPI. You would need a really grunty computer to create a 300 dpi image. It has to do with the fact that ZBrush’s Pixol features have to use a larger bit of memory to hold all the Z-depth info. The more pixols the more memory. Ah, Pixolator wrote a good explaination about this somewhere. (Maybe someone could find it?)
The way to get around this is to make a large document (up to 4000 x 4000 pixels - though 2000 x 2000 is fine), which is done in the DOCUMENT > INITILIZE subpalette. Make your picture and then export the large picture as a PSD file (also from the document palette). Then resize it down in Photoshop. This will get rid of any jaggies.
Either that, or create lots of small ZBrush images and compile them together in Photoshop.

Hey, hope to catch ya around. Do stay in touch!
Upham

Just to add a little to what Upham said. Perhaps DPI is the wrong term since it referes to printer resolution. PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is more accurate, and as Upham has said, ZBrush renders to screen resolution, 72 ppi. A 2000 x 2000 pixel image is about 28" x 28" at 72 ppi. In Photoshop, you have control over the print size, as well as the resolution (if you look at the Image Size screen, you can see what I mean).
If you click OFF of resample image and change the resolution to 300 ppi, Photoshop will kepp all of your 2000 x 2000 pixels and put them in a smaller area when you decide to print it. Notice how the Print size has changed, but the Pixel dimensions have not.

so now you have about a 6½" x 6½" image.

I hope this helps

Hi Colin,

I want all my images at 300dpi so I render them as big as my computer can take (upto 4000x4000 in ZBrush then change them from 72 to 300 in Photoshop as I am sure you do.

Greetings Mr. Thompson!

I’ve had great success in using Z as an illustration tool. I’ve been told by my publishers that it’s a most eyecatching media. It’s qualitites have garnered alot of attention for my office.

personally, I build large (3000 X 3000) when working for print.

Take it into Micrographx and resave as a TIFF, then size. No problems from any of my printers as of yet.

I’ve also upped my memory and my video card for better render. (God is in the hardware not necessarily the details…

Hello Colin Thompson,

This question and many others were answered in this thread:

I hope this helps.

Hi Colin,

I just visited your website which is very fun to look at. I was happy to see another Mac user who has chosen to use Studio Artist and ZBrush together. I tried many other programs and eventually decided to only use these two together along with Photoshop, and I’m not regretting it. I look forward to seeing your progress at illustrating a book entirely on computer. ZBrush Central is a great place to find inspiration and answers to questions.

Hello Colin, welcome to ZCentral!

I too visited your site and poked around - many wonderful images. I laughed quite a bit when reading you had to manually correct 10,000 calendars in a weeks time, thats a lot of 26s - sorry, I’m sure there was no humor at the time

Hello @ all,

I am new in ZBrush, i just downloaded the demo version today and it looks absolutely great.
Since several years i am familiar with Poser, Bryce, Terragen and PS but ZBrush seems to open new doors.
I had exactely the same question as above (how to get huge files to work with in Photoshop for prints etc) and i just got the answer. In fact Terragen is handeling the dpi question in the same manner. So it is not new for me. But one thing seems to be clear to me … One should have the registered version
Greetings !

This link will take you to the ‘DPI Script’, which is a useful utility for this problem…
Hope this helps!

Hi Zazie

Thank you very much for the script, Stonecutter. It seems to be very helpful.
And thx to Frenchy for the welcome greetings :stuck_out_tongue:
