Displacement weapon for "Seven Swords"

[Dragon_Sword.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘17645’,‘Dragon_Sword.jpg’,1,0))

Hi all, It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything but here is a sword I modeled in Zbrush for Tsui Hark’s film “Seven Swords” and rendered in Vray (3dsMax). I generated 4 or 5 cavity maps at varying depths to mak in shine and colour variation to match the real steel sword. The sculpt is based on contless photographs taken of the real prop so all the swirls and details are matched closely as possible.

Sword time!

Asolutly wonderfull…
Just small question : why do you need 3d sword for your film?

The film had many fx shots and quite often the actors were acting with handles / hilts only for safety. The sword often got thrown or had to strike a patrticular target so 3D props were used. Our team worked for many months completing the effects for the film.

Wow, absolutely amazing!!!

WoW many awesomes, i’m a pretty big hark fan, i own several of his films on dvd, great job on the sword, know when i see the movie i can say i kinda almost know the guy who made the 3d sword

Tsui’s a very nice guy too.
BTW, there is a short spin of the sword on my site too. It’s 3MB.

ps: your website is a book to learn from!

Bautiful detailed work.
Congratulations.

Astonishing detail.

That’s definitely awesome!

Buen trabajo y exquisito detalle. Enhorabuena grassynoel.

can we get a shot of the full sword?

Thanks all,
i don’t have too many pics of the sword but it basically is an ornate hilt on a long blade so only a simple blade has been cropped. Check out the animation of it spinning to see the details. There are two dragons who’s tails wind around the sword which you can see more clearly on the spin.

Here is a closer look at the dragons and a full shot of the sword for neuroticgothguy.
At this stage, the blade was only stand-in. We matched the blade to each shot in the film individually so it changed over the production.

ahh, nice, i like it, though i think it look better if the blade was a bit longer, though i don’t know if that is up to you to decide…but its just a suggestion.

You’re right, it wasn’t up to me. I was matching a movie prop which was already designed by thier art department.
the movie website is here…
