Dinosaur (feel free to critique my ass off)

Here’s the latest shots of one of my current projects. It’s for my demo reel which will be finished by september.

Please give me any pointers you can, I’m desperate for input!

I love the model itself, but IMHO the spine and tail look too stiff/straight. Looking forward to further images!

Colorwise is too tinted white If you have time to mess around with SSS shaders I would try tthat too. Greys and greens are the colors I’m thinking he would need. And maybe some blues and browns. I’d assume they have skin similar to a gila monster or alligator.

its already sss actually, but i agree there is a bit too much white, mainly from the lights. was thinking of putting some green tint into them.

I think it’s pretty good, if you’re happy with it…then that’s what counts really. I’m not sure if it’s a typical looking dinosaur, perhaps put more strain lines in the neck for more realism.

ye its not really typical, the concept is more of a transitional species from dino to bird.

strain lines?

tis a wicked one, real nice. would agree about the tail moving it would add some life

please forgive my ignorance, IMHO?

I really like it, looks pretty cool, nice job with the render.

IMHO = In My Honest Opinion :+1:

here’s the latest pass after a couple of tweaks

First glance I thought this was a concept model for Cloverfield 2. He looks more alien than dino like. Still pretty cool anyway.

Hi dude,

Good modeling and design ! But you goes a bit shy on skin details, they are visible on the close up but unfortunately not on the full view.

ye, i know what you mean, tryin to work on that…

any suggestions?

Nice stuff. I had a similar problem with detailing rough lizardlike skin. I found you can get pretty okay results if you create a bunch of bumpy skin alpha brushes from photos. If use them as masks all over your model (not worrying about details) and then run an inflate or standard brush, at a low setting over the entire model you end up with a very subtle bump detailing overywhere. Cavity detection on a material can really pick this out in a render!! Then you go in and add bigger scales/details where needed around the eyes mouth etc. You could maybe do this on your current model on an extra layer. It might give you the extra detail you’re after?!?!?
There’s my two cents for what it’s worth.

Keep up the good work!!
:+1:

thanks! i’ll see what i can do!

here’s the latest after a bit of dabbling. still need to fix the talon texture. i cant seem to get specularity rendered on a separate render layer, does anyone know of a tutorial or tips that could help?
