Brush types, definition

In the documentation, it says about brush type. I don’t see a drop down that is named type?

Here is the question, is brush type just a different combinations of settings in the brush tab/panel that make it behave like each mentioned brush types. So if I wanted to created my modified version of one of those brush type, I would start with one of the presets and work from that.

Let’s suppose that I have no preset at all. How would I approach all those settings? Is there a actually reference manual that go to each and every buttons and slider and describe clearly what they do clearly. The reference manual just doesn’t do it for me. Every once in a while, it try to explain something that seems to assume that I have understand something else already!

Are you referring to “Base Type”? When you hover over a brush you’ll see a designation, for example, Base Type: Standard. There’s also Clay, Move, Trim, Single Layer etc. Afaik these refer to internal core capabilities of the brush (class attributes) which set up the basic behaviour and the modifiers that are applicable to the brush. It’s not possible to turn a Standard base type brush into a Single Layer brush through brush modifiers. But you can see that the Chisel brush and the Layer brush are both base type Single Layer so (I think) it’s possible to tweak either of these to become more like each other, or at least retain the same core functionality which is operation on a single layer.
