Based on some comments on this forum,
I have been looking at the free 3D softwares
Blender and Wings3d. Neat stuff!
It seems that Blender has more of a following. Also there are books sold at amazon.com on Blender. I didn’t see any on Wings3d.
Which is better to use with ZBrush?
Which one is better as an overall 3D package?
Why Wings over Blender? OR
Why Blender over Wings?

i cant tell you why but i can tell you for sure that wings is the better solution.
it starts with the interface,very clean in wings 3d,much space for modeling, in blender,the interface sucks,to much sh for my taste.
looking for an “overall 3D package” blender would be more complete. But, most of the ppl I know turned away from Blender because of the learning curve and some of the functions instable.

Truespace is the name. Any version will do, but keep away from version 4.
Wings3D is fun and quick, but in no way something I would call complete. It will be though, one fine day!!!
Wings3D is a dedicated box modeling app.
A very powerful box modeling app which has the tools required to enable a very fast workflow for box modeling.
Blenders box modeling tools are not even close.
Ok, I forgot to mention that Wings3D and ZBrush are perfect playmates.
Box model in Wings, then import as .obj into ZBrush for further defining surfaces and for texturing. Sweet 
As for all around 3D packages, I dunno really, there are quite a few in each budget group from which to choose from.
I have my own favorite two or three packages, and use each for the strengths and weakness’ each has.
My suggestion would be to try as many different packages out as you can get a hold of, and when you find something to your way of working then dig in and have at er

(same than 3Dmax on a floppy disk
