Anatomical Cognition

I thought i would start a thread to post my anatomy/ figure studies. since i don’t post too much of my work, i figured this would be better.

This is an ecorche study for school. i would pose it, but that’s not what is wanted for class. I think I’m about ready to get this one done, even though I’m sure it could still use improvement. I’ll still probably try and add some slight striations in the muscle. Still i would like to hear critiques or suggestions. I’m not very sensitive about my work so feel free to go at it.

the class provides us with photos of Andrew Cawrse’s ecorche model from anatomytools. i started with this but decided to go for a different look and my professor said he wouldn’t mind. I am currently making a clay ecorche model as well, and this class pushes us to use Dr Paul Richer’s book, which i began to us as reference for the overall shape. In addition to artistic anatomy references i used what i could find of real photos/ videos of dissections of cadavers. I used a book called “Atlas of Clinical Gross Anatomy” for it’s photos as well as some dissection videos that i easy found through Google. both of which i felt were very helpful

i love anathomy, it really awsome your work keep it up

damn dude thats lookin tight, how long did that take if you don’t mind me asking

Hi YanSan! I think you’re doing a great job on the anatomy study! Looking forward to seeing more of your sculpts (and maybe some pics of the clay studies perhaps…) :+1: !

@ janhasse - Thank you

@ chogunson - thanks, i’m not sure how long it took, i changed the way it looked a few times, but i started it about 9 weeks ago or so maybe something like 3-4 days a week for 2 hours each day, something like that.

@ Etcher - thanks. how did you know about my clay studies? did you read my cgtalk post? yeah, you and others would like to see them, i can post my clay ecorche or other clay sculpts.

Here is some new stuff, the horse is for the class i am taking, i’ve never really depicted a horse before so i’m not sure how accurate it is. The woman i’ve decided to do on my own, although i’m thinking about changing the pose slightly, maybe move her arms. to me right now it seems a little boring, but i’m not sure what i’ll do.

chogunson, if you’re wondering about the time on these, the horse is about 2 days work, 1 making the mesh in maya and the other in Zbrush. the woman sculpt i’ve worked on on and off, debating wether to scratch it and start a new one, but it’s about maybe 3 days work or so, although less diligently than the horse.

as always, feel free to add any comments, thoughts, suggestions or critiques.

first pic reminds me of jon from the watchmen

I really like the anatomy sculpts, they seem very tight and precise

Hi Yansan! quote:“how did you know about my clay studies?”. But, Yansan, in your text accompanying the anatomy sculpts you stated:“I am currently making a clay ecorche model as well”, that’s how I knew. But now that you mentioned it, I’ll definitely check your thread at CGtalk. Altough I’d love to see the clay pics here!

New sculpts look great! Keep studying man! The effort is really showing :+1: !

Ha, my eyes or memory must be getting worse. i didn’t remember seeing or writing it. i thought i only mentioned it at cgtalk.

Wow, excellent work here! The anatomy is amazing. I myself am currently a student, and I have studied the anatomy two-dimensionally yet would love to attempt a 3D model. You said you used Dr Paul Richer’s book for reference, are there any other good reference books you used as well?

thanks

I primarily used Richer’s book, a medical anatomy book called “Atlas of Clinical Gross Anatomy” which has images of cadavers from dissections, and medical dissection videos i found through google, i believe from Wisconsin’s Med school. the dissection stuff i think helps to understand how the muscles form around each other and connect, plus you’re looking at the real thing, not another artist’s interpretation. i looked a little bit at the sculpture from anatomytools and little bit of Scott Eatons ecorche, or the little i could find of it.

Awhile ago i made a base head mesh based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s sketches. yesterday i decided to mess around with it a bit and this is essentially what i ended up with. I don’t like the beard/ hair all that much, but it’s better than my first go was. i’m not sure how much more i will mess around with this, i wasn’t going strickly on accuracy to the drawing since i was just to work fast.

i feel like i need to work on ways to present my work better, i’m never sure which matierial to use. i fiddled around with rendering in zbrush, and i’ve downloaded a trial for hypershot, which seems like a very interesting rendering package. any tips or recommendations?

Who can guess which sketches these are from? (also, they are exactly the same mesh, just different angles and hair/ no hair)

Hi Yansan! Thanks for the info on the anatomy books an vids! Quote:" plus you’re looking at the real thing, not another artist’s interpretation." I’m having the same problem when using reference books. Just makes one wonder under what circumstances Da Vinci made his studies… .

Nice sculpt! My guess-> see attachment.

i believe one of my teachers talked about Da Vinci using cadavers, or some sort of access to the real deal. I find it interesting how many of his sketches resemble himself, so i assume he used mirrors to refer to his own body.

Etcher, your guess is probably closer than the ones i was looking at, since i was mixing his self portrait with the Grotesque old men sketch, it’s kinda turned into a mishmash of his drawings.

i’ve worked on it a bit more to try and make it more interesting. i chose this bust as my submisson for organic modeling in my schools sping show. we’ll see if it gets in.

anyway here’s what i entered, i may work on it a little more at some point, but for now i’m done with it.

Good work on the ecorche. I like the Da Vinci head. It’s really apparent in the profile view :+1:

thanks captain.

i little update on the woman, hopefully the next post it will be finished.

Nice work. I feel like the hands on the woman could be larger, they seem a bit disproportionate to the rest of her body. Overall looking very nice so far:)

really nice man

thanks for the kind comments, i have worked slightly on the woman, but nothing substantial. not sure when i will work on it more.

in the meantime here is the finished horse. i would have liked to pose it, but the class requires a neutral pose.

i just moved back home to Michigan, so hopefully i can start making some more sculpts again, but for now this is my clay Ecorche sculpt. some people seemed to be interested in seeing it. from what is really only my 2nd sculpture class.

managed to do a quick hand study yesterday. perhaps I’ll eventually put more detail into it, but I’m more focused on structure at the moment.
