Alpha brushes

Greetings,

I am spending time getting used to ZBrush core and after watching a tutorial where alphas are used I started playing around with alphas but am concerned something is not rendering correctly.

I am using the standard brush-free form with alphas 7. The brush size is 200. Are the brush strokes supposed to look like this?

Here is another pic…standard brush at size 64 with different intensity levels…this doesn’t seem right.

Am I correct with that assumption?

Hello @JodeeB ,

There are a couple different things going on here.

To start, ZBrush doesn’t use any type of real time smoothing effect as that would have a negative performance impact at the polycounts the program works with. So you’re always going to be seeing the actual geometry. The edges of the polygons will become visible as you stretch the geometry farther out of a non-square shape, and this effect will be more apparent at lower levels of mesh resolution (polycount).

You can:

  1. Subdivide the mesh to smooth it or perform your strokes on a higher resolution mesh which will improve the quality of detail the mesh can capture.

  2. Use a feature like Dynamesh to quickly redistribute the topology along the surface to eliminate stretching.

  3. Activate Sculptris Pro mode which will add geometry to the mesh in real time as you make your strokes, preventing the geometry from distorting.

In addition, it seems like you’re concerned with the default spacing of the Standard Brush? That is a typical result for that brush at the default settings with that alpha applied on a mesh of that resolution. You can diminish the stroke spacing by going to Stroke> Lazy Mouse and lowering the Lazy Step value. Note that Lazy Mouse must be active.
