About "tilde" on the keyboard

Hi,

I have tried now several times to do the Picknick tutorial, and especially the part of the basket. I’m wondering but the touch “tilde” on my french keyboard doesn’t react at all as described in the tutorial. To move an object (i.e. to create a seamless texture), I have to use the H and V sliders, but that’s too long.

Is there something I’m doing wrong or is there another issue to get the tilde ?

BTW normally, to use tilde in a text, I have to use ALT Gr+ the “2é” touch or do ALT+126.

Thanks for help.

to move your layer you must of 2 layers with something on it… or you can duplicate a layer then by choosing flip h or flip v or the tidle key you can move your layers…maybe you can show a script to see what your doing to get a better understanding of what you trying to do…

There is a thread on Community Forum dedicated to international “tilde” keys (but i can’t find it now).
This is the way i discovered which key act as “tilde” for my (italian) keyboard:

  1. open PREFERENCES Palette (see figure)
  2. Hit all the key (one to one) until the number 126 appear on marked-red position.

I forgot to mention that after you press the tilde key you should drag in the image to move it while keeping the tilde key pressed. This is what is happening in the picnic tut.

After you have made a seamless tile you can grab it as a texture with the grabber tool, this is in the tool palette and looks like a little orange square with four arrows coming out of it. You use this to marqee you tile. After you do this the tile will appear as a texture in the texture palette.

You can delete the tile layer after you have grabbed the texture. You can see it in action by drawing a sphere and selecting the newly grabbed texture then go to edit mode. the texture will be on the sphere.

Now go to Tools>Modifiers>Texture. There you can adjust the h repeat and v repeat. Try it.

Thanks cameyo, this tip was exactly what I needed. I have found it:)

Grazie Cameyo! Mi fa piacere sapere che nel
forum c’è un compaesano.

Translation : Thanks Cameyo! I am glad to find
out that on this forum there’s a co-citizen

My tilde seem to work intermittantly. I have a UK keyboard and I managed to get the scroll features to work once by pressing the right shift button and the hash key. When I do that now it doesn’t work.
Anyone with the same spec got any ideas? Am I missing something obvious?

Ah Ha!
My tilable pan function is not accessed with the tilde key on my Dell UK keyboard, but by the '/@ key. (The second key to the left of the return key.)
Hope this helps someone.

Cheers
Dave

The tileable pan function is accessed by the @ key on my UK keyboard as well, thanks for the info.

The french keyboard’s key replacing the tilde is “%ù”, equivalent to the ASCII 126:)

This is the info on using Z with other keyboards…It was actually in the ever-useful Quicklinks…!

Thanks for the pointer. I think the tilde is an bizarre little beast. On my keyboard it is above the hash key and works in every app except ZBrush where I must use “@” to get the tilable bg function. That is right next door to my actual tilde key.
I’m off to the Keyboard shortcut post to report my findings

ah, that sounds like a great way to find out, cameyo! anyhoo, i did not manage to get the 126 with german imac-keyboard and have to switch to american keyboard which makes it takes some time to get past the lil confusion as for my fav command ctrl+z i have to do the ctrl+y thereafter  anyone been more lucky?
