Aayla the Jedi Youngling

Hi, this character is created for CGPlus Star Wars Reimagined challenge.
I remagined Aayla Secura when she was a little kid and was training hard to become a Jedi. When she was still young, her skin tone is still fleshy, until she gets older her skin colour will change to blue. I also change her face a little, to make her look a bit more creature like. I used a lot of references like cuttlefish/ squid, water salamander, puffer fish etc. I wish I have more time to add colour pattern on her skin/ hair and details on her clothing. I love Japanese culture therefore her costume is heavy influence by it. Even she was a little kid and she likes toys like all the other kids do ( hence the octopus-like toy on Obi/sash), she has the determination to become a top tank Jedi. Her weapon is lightsaber cross shakkhara (monk staff), a weapon that can be used in a combat and also for praying in Jedi Temple.
I learnt a lot from this exercise. It is a very good experience and I appreciate CGplus gave all of us an opportunity to take part in this wondeful contest.
Finally, I hope you like it, the young, innocent and passionate Aayla Secura.

nicely done.

This is an awesome model. I love the pose, the coloring, etc.

Quick question. I saw where you showed the progress on the website you linked. It shows from Zspheres, which I know some people hate, to the sculpture already having the clothing.
What method did you use to sculpt the clothing? Did you extract over a basic form, or did you sculpt it by adding the various thickness and smoothing the edges, etc?

If you were going to rig this, would you treat it differently?

Thanks!

Really awesome vision! Nice sculpting!

Some close up shot of the clothing.

!!!very cool work!!!

Hi srlake314,

Thanks for the kind words.
I started with Zsphere because it is a quick and easy method for me to block out something.
After I have the base form that made out of Zsphere, I hit adaptive skin and used ZremesherGuides Brush and hit Zremesh so I can a better topology on the base body.
For the clothing, yes I created masks and extracted new subtool for the cloth from it. After that I use Topology Brush to retopologise the cloth meshes.
At this stage, I unwrapped the UV of the meshes in Maya for surface detailing in Zbrush. Basically this is how I made the cloth for this character. Hope these help.

Cheers!

I appreciate the visual steps. That really helps alot to see everyone’s methods and pipelines. I’ve heard of other methods for clothing, such as using the curve surface tool to build clothing. This way you can also take care of topology from the beginning. I’ve tried it and it is very different, but I imagine once you get used to it, it can be very productive. I’m glad you showed me your steps because it is so helpful. Not that there aren’t 1001 videos, tutorials, etc, I just like to see how a finished project is made. Just helps to cement it into my head :).

Thanks again.

@srlake314
I wouldn’t post pictures in others threads except I was asked for.
This is seen as a bad behaviour on any design forums I know.
Best edit and delete.
Same with capturing a thread with questions not belonging to topic.

Post it in Troubleshooting & Question section, please.
Posting a link to your own work and asking for critic in a specific character presentation thread?? - never seen that before - open your own thread for this, please.

@Jeanise
Your work is again so high quality. Details on clothes are breathtaking.
I love your thread on cgplus even more because it’s always a pleasure to see the development - from concept to finish product.
On concept the tentacle braid idea looks super cute and helped me understand final tentacle composition better.
Really like the way you went to more animal like look.

Best,

Knacki

I’m sorry this was in response to how they were doing clothing. I was merely posting something in relation to what their response was to my questioning how they did it. That’s all.

Sorry for stepping on your toes.

I’ll remove it however as to not offend anyone.

Headline sez it all: I’m a Star Wars nerd getting all pedantic about the race which character belongs to.

To get back On Topic:

Nice work! I really like the patterns in the fabric, and the contrast in surfaces and textures you’ve got going on.
The clay render really shows off the different materials at play, and I find the color scheme you used to be really harmonious!

How long did it take to finish this figure? You say you learned a lot from this exercise. What did you learn? Care to share what you learned?

And thanks for showing your breakdown!

Wow this is a beautiful character. Her lightsaber design is very unique and it looks awesome on her. I think it fits her perfectly. Love the overall style of the clothes and the colours are amazing. You did an amazing job

She looks really great! Love those details!
