3dsmax to Zbrush export fbx/obj low poly

Hello,

i’m looking for tips for exporting an existing model to Zbrush to sculpt it further.
Some of my models get the nonstandard polygon error but some don’t, both look horrible.
Zremesher doesn’t fix anything, I checked normals as well.
What can I do for the model to look identical to how they look in 3dsmax?

Thank you for your time.

Hello @8erlyk ,

ZBrush doesn’t support ngons (polygons with more than 4 points). They cannot exist at any time in ZBrush and if you try to import a model with this type of geometry into ZBrush it must insert edges to force quads and tris. This can potentially form problematic or undesired connections. For the best results limit your work in your external program to quads only, but at the least make sure the geometry is being converted to quads on export.

The other major reason why a mesh might look different is that ZBrush does not use any procedural smoothing effect for the polygons, so you’re going to see the actual geometry which will have a faceted appearance at low resolution. Smoothing in ZBrush is a function of subdivision. This is because these types of effects would be redundant and negatively impact performance with the polycounts ZBrush typically works with, as well as muddying fine surface detail. If you want to ensure a closer visual appearance to the mesh in your external program, disable any kind of poly smoothing effect in the viewport.

For any issues not covered by the above , please contact ZBrush support and document the problem in greater detail so we can see what you are seeing.

Thank you!

Thank you for your answer,

I have found where the ngons were located upon remembering they were caused by me dividing polygons at some point and now have been fixed.

I have tried add subdivisions using D but it just cuts the model into pieces, I’m looking to learning to fix holding edges and get back if needed.

I do have an album of images covering what attempts i’ve made: https://imgur.com/a/YJUt1Vb

Edit: after viewing my .obj in windows 3d viewer, it’s the triangles that are the issue here. I’ll try to look into that instead since I don’t really know anything.

Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

Hi @8erlyk ,

You can just drag and drop images directly into your reply here so we don’t have to deal with broken links or require people to click on blind links.

Thank you!

Hello,

Sorry about that, i’ve also looked into my issue some more with someone on reddit and we’ve come to the conclusion that this is happening purely because the models are too low poly.

fbx ver

obj ver, retriangulate polygons turned off. Only 3dsmax 2023 's version has smoothening.

Am I supposed to simply move elsewhere if i don’t wish to start from scratch? and of course find a 4-faced polygon if I do plan to make something from scratch in Zbrush to avoid this in the future?

Yours truly,
