3D Print Exporter

I am trying to use this plugin, following the tutorial in the Classroom. But when I do it, it saves almost immediately and creates a tiny file. I have a programme that can view STL files and it says there is no model.

Is this plugin working, or is it busted?

3.5 R3 by the way.

The 3.5 r3 exporter hasn’t worked for me at all, it seems bugged.

I am also having problems with the exported file.
I have tried a number of different shapes at different levels of decimation.
Once the files are expoted from the 3D print plugin there size is only 84KB - which is way too small.
I used these plugins with the previous version and they worked for me.
I think the problem may be in Decimation Master - after the object is pre-processed your are to set the amount of decimation and press decimate.
This seems to happen instantly, so I don’t think the decimation is occuring.
I have submitted a ticket to support.
I will let you know if I have any luck.

So, I was kind of expecting an answer from Pixologic. I’ll raise a support ticket I guess.

I’d like you to do the following:

  1. Go to your Control Panel>Remove Programs and select ZBrush 3.5 in the list. Click on Change (above the list) and use the Modify feature to remove 3D Print Exporter.
  2. Download 3D Print Exporter again from http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/ and install it through the normal plugin installation method rather than the R3 installer.
See if that fixes your problem.

Just got in and checked. I have done what you said before, and the version of 3D print export is the same version I tried it with. I am waiting for Support to email me what they say is the fix.

I posted in saying I was having the same problems with 3D print exporter as you were.
I also unistalled and reinstalled with no luck. I noticed too that when I exported the file from Decimation Master as an OBJ the file size was extreemly small and would not open. However I could export it as an OBJ from the Tool Tray.
But there is hope!
Read the response I got today - we’ll see what happens Friday.

Hi George,

A new release of Decimation Waster and 3D Print Exporter will be available in a couple of days. I invite you to download the new versions this Friday afternoon at our download center.
The version numbers will be 1.13 for Decimation Master and 1.12 for 3D Print Exporter.

Sorry again for these problems.
Sincerely,

Thomas Roussel

Well, that didn’t happen. And I have had no response to my two tickets about it for over a week now. What gives?

I’ve had an engineer that has been waiting for the last two week for me to get him something from ZBrush into Solidworks. The best I could give him ended up being turntables to refer to. It left me a bit embarrassed to be honest. I tried giving him an .obj file but it was way big if I remember right. I tried the .stl exporter and would only get a 1k file.
I’d like to see some type of resolve to this issue, and preferably not a work-around.

do you still have 3.1 installed anywhere? if so use that for the export of the stl, it works fine, thats what Im doing.

steve

I have 3.1 yes but it won’t load my mesh. I have been told 3.1 doesn’t work any more by support.

I am not expecting a work around. I was told there was a new version on the exporter, and the guy earlier on was told it would be available from Friday.

I expect to be finished my sculpting by Monday, so fro
Tuesday this problem is costing me money and repution.

Whe will I have the new version, that’s all I want to know.

Hi Gordon Robb,
I haven’t heard any news since my last ticket. Unfortunately I no longer have the ealier version - with that one I could export. I am looking at other software that will import-export from OBJ to STL with some editing features - maybe Rhino 4. I’ll let you know what I find.

I have hear nothing else either. I was told at the beginning of last week that I was being sent the file prior to it going on the website, and it was Thomas Roussel that said it (the same guy dealing with yours).

It’s not good at all.

I wish I had 3.1 so i could export, but I bought 3.5. They really should let us access older versions if we bought 3.5 since there are so many issues with it.

An update to Decimation Master has now been made available. Please see http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=71265&page=15&pp=15

Nice! I’ll give it a shot.

I know I’m a little late to get on board here but I’m pulling my hair out. I can’t get this plugin to show up in zbrush. I’m using 3.5r3 and I’ve tried about 15 times to get this thing to work and it’s just not showing up. It’s weird because all the other plugins I have like Transpose master and Image plane showed up without any hassle. Any advice for me? Thanks

Where is the directory that you’re installing them to?

I have only just found this thread after a search for stl export failure which was a let down as it was to be important in my ZBrush to CNC pipeline.
@ Gordon Robb, you could have met the deadline with an export out of “Mesh Lab”, a free file converter and from Rhino demo also free. The odd thing was that the Rhino file was 20.1 Mb and the Mesh Lab was 3.0 Mb as saved from a decimated ZBrush obj. Both the stl’s imported into Solidworks okay and looked and created a toolpath (in Desk Proto) identical! I still have ZBrush version 2, 3.1, and the new (buggy one)
