WIP - Dragon head

Neat dragon head! One thing really strikes me though, you need to widen the head in the area of the eyes. It looks like your dragon can’t really see forward due to the current anatomy. Take a look at the head of a T-Rex or alligator for reference. I would also reposition the horns upwards, since they may obstruct a huge area of vision where they are now. Oh yeah, and a dragons body is supposedly completely covered in scales, nose to tip of tail, so you would not be able to see any veins and skin. Keep posting!

derkomai: I agree, “Drakan” was great and the dragons in “Reign of Fire” are the best I have seen in a movie yet (not really dragons, but a cross between dragons and wyverns though, since they did not have 4 limbs and extra wings, but could breathe fire). Please do share your dragon sketches with us! You do seem to have a thing for these mythical creatures and I would love to see our take on them.

I could have a lot to say about dragons…

but first I don’t make difference between dragons and wyverns, I have discovered this term less than one half year ago, but I still done without this…

dragons for me are a global group of big reptilian beasts wich look like the dragon (I know I know, not very precis)
I mean that a dragon can have 6 limbs as four, as two or height… I should think about the classification more…
but if dragons existed (?) I remember that it would be more a 4 limbs creature than 6 limbs (according to the evolutyion concepts)
but they don’t exist, so they are a subject of imagination…
according to me , dragons can breath fire or not, theyre is the group of dragon, coumpound of a big variety of species, in wich we can make an 'under group" of the 4limbed dragons, that we could name “wyvern” if it is necessary… not to me in fact…

see you later cause I have to leave! (i’ll explain you something about the eyes, in fact they can be on the sides, even against the logic)

I knew there was something wierd about the eyes :open_mouth: Thx for teh feedback guys!

Highlander: Thx for noticing the viens, I guess I’ll remove them. For now though, I wanna focus on the modeling rather than texture. Thanks for the heads up though, I’ll keep that in mind when texturing :D.

Derkomai, I would love to see some drawings, I’m more of a visual learner anyways :D. Thx so much for the help guys.

hey! cool! but, even if it’s unbeleivable ( ) there is a girl here!

for the anecdote, derkomaï is a grec word wich mean to watch over, to look at and which is the origin of drakkon, in english, dragon! it is from this that the legend of the treasure keeper dragon is explained!

I don’t know how to make my posts but…

the first think to tell to you is that you must think on your entire dragon:
is he a flyer, a swimmer or terrestrial, or the 3? is he a predator, a prey, or both of them? is he more a magical creature or do you see it “realistic”? or do you only looking for a style exercice?

it’s only according to this critera (criterion?) that you can decide wich aspect you’re dragon head will have!

here is a quick drawing of the skull I imagine your dragon can have:

and I will explain in different posts the most important points underlined upper and over things you can change -if you want- to ameliorate your dragon!

Amazing! Thanks for the lesson on dragons  Anyways, my dragon is probably terrestrial, as you can see he isn’t very aerodynamic and is bulky. He is definately a predator :P. Lastly, he is more realistic than magical. Thanks for the drawing! I will definately use it to correct some parts and to improve on the model :P. I will post an update as soon as I get time. Thanks alot Derkomai, your feedback is greatly appreciated!

morphology:

if your dragon is a flying or swimming one, he need aerodynamism (?) more than if he were just a terrestrial creature to reduce to the maximum the air frictions.
as you see on my drawing I hve drew a triangle in which I place the skull

after, following the fact he is a hunter or if he eat carrions, he is a predator or a prey, the disposition of eyes, nose, the type of teeth will change…

to continue my drawing, it is cery shematic, but… after bones come muscles:

ok, so terrestrial!

about the eyes:

-scientist side:
as a predator, and folowing the nature skills (???) your dragon must have a devloped binocular sight, wich mean that the of the eyes aperture must be oriented forward(like draco wich eyes are totally on the face, like our eyes, us humans! )
if your dragon is THE UNCONTESTED predator of his lands, he don’t need to look after he’s security, so the horn are no more a probleme…
if he were prey too, he may need to look backward, but I think this is not the case!

then, do this dragon don’t have a kind of sens that we never have could study it wich replaces the sight and can be much more precise than the sight:
the sight is orientated, and stopped by the first material element ahead…
if your dragon have a sens related to electrical phenomens, wave of any kind (ect) air vibrations… he can have a tridimensional sens, or wich can go through the matiere! parhaps no more need of sight, such species can see theyre eyes disapear with the evolution, if tey really don’t need it!

-usage:
the most often the eyes of dragons are on the side af the head…

-personnal advice:
i’ll advice you to give him a bidimensional AND lateral sight at same time: you make the “corner ovale” aperture visible on profil and the half eye shape on shape…
you can also use eagle model: theyre eyes pivoting, the eagle can look on his side or his front…

a little schema in few minutes…

Thank you! Amazing advice. Using a eagle’s head will definately be helpful, I totally understand what you’re saying about the eyes. Your advice has been very helpful, I’ll start modifying the model soon. Lookout for an update

the teeth:

-scientist side:
if he is a hunter, he must have teeth wich catch the flash, strong closing jaws muscles, teeth to tear…
teeth I have drawn are inspired by the feline teeth, a good model…
I suppose your dragon is big weighty and so the simple weight of the skull falling on lower jaws are suffisant to kill small preys. next if he have to fight against some awkward neighbours, he must have solide muscles…

-usage:
we can find many type of jaws in different drawings

-advice:
the most important is to have in the front part of jaws some pointy teeth of irregular size, the target is that the tallest can go into the flesh and by theyre orientation trap the prey…
at the back, some flat teeth can help to tear and cut, if your dragon eat small preys don’t forget the crushing teeth, like our molar, it can be useful!

I continue, me! cause missing a membrane question… it can be quickly resolved:

make a dino like membrane here, you’ll see, in general case it makes much better!

I advice you too to “renforce” the base of horns, and make the mouth aperture goes more backward…

but if you want not to use advices because you want a particular style effect, free to you!

concerning the nose, too: i’ll orient nostril most on the sides and make an “evident” closing muscle, if he need to protect against clay or water projections, or fire…

think about the breathing fire (if i do) do you wich more a “chemical” combustion or a logic of gaz inflamation?

you can anticipate too if you want somme communications “organes” (a kind of noise amplificator, for example) it can influat on the head shape!

so…

I think that is all!

hoping I learned you many interresting things!

and what do you think about my english? you can read?

! I will forgot ears! have he ears? it ismost of times simply holes on the head.

here is to finish my own version:

i didn’t know for the colours so… it was green or brown…

I think tje neck isn’t nice: i woulb be better if finner, with taller “pics” (I ll do a feather shock of hair(I don’t know use conditional in english…))
the bottom is a failure (in fact the limit betwen yellow and grenne is to o down)

Hehe probably holes for ears will be good. Lol I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “with taller pics” on the neck. I will refine the neck after the main head actually looks like a head LOL. I’m probably gonna remove the eyeball for now as it looks really messed up.

One question though, I already tried to make the membrane but I couldn’t figure out a good way to make it. Any suggestions?

with the ZB trial, I used to make the mouth aperture without the membrane and then i was “digging” from both left and right side, here is the result:

Derkomai some sweet advice there, but one thing id like to add bout the teeth in back, they dont neccessary need to be flat teeth, since flat molars are more on the omniovirous side of things. If you look at dogs they have mountain like shaped teeth in the back. Which enables them to tear flesh off of bones, and or crush bones completly when dealing with larger prey.

If your dragon is more lizard-like, then T-Rex teeth are fine. They are bladelike, and predatory dinos had no molars. Gastroliths in their belly helped pulp the meat for digestion after it was bitten off.

So usually, for dragon heads, a good mix of dino, lizard ( croc and alligator ) are always a good source of inspiration.

Carnivore molars are spikey, because they are designed to masticate and chew up stringy tough connective tissue. Herbivore molars are flatter, dealing with grinding plant matter. Omnivores are somewhere in between.

wow thx alot Soulstealer! The pics really help. Ill try to get the model updated soon. I’ll be sure not to dissapoint you guys, and girls :stuck_out_tongue:

in fact, it depends of what your dragon will eat, or whatt style do you prefere!

cause you can make crocodile like teeth too or range of many small identique teeth (see godzilla)
here is the 1/6 model!

or teeth wich recess (??) each other
here is the more evident picture I have found, even if tyhe mouth is open:
http://h.yimg.com/download2.games.yahoo.com/games/buzz2/content/p/4/436972/925725_20060214_screen001.jpg

but you started with large teeth, so it’s as you want but it would be logical to continue like this! (and thank you Soulstealer I was speaking of this type of jaws, but not clarly apparently! XD)

what? you mean no up?
did you give up slayir?

No havent given up, I’ve been makin little progress because of alot of school assignments and tests. The small updates arent worth putting up, so I’ll post the final update. School sucks… :stuck_out_tongue:

XD
good luck for the tests!
