Holy sh*t Hanno…those are some of the best cloth sculpts I have ever seen. And the renders are sublime (if they are renders, cause the lighting with the “bokeh” effect looks so convincing, they look more like photographs from 3D prints).

I can see your dilemma though…in order to be able to post them, we really would need a new class of Top Row, like…Top Top Row or something

The book is in the works, now I know when…

Awesome! Looking forward to it…

Thank you so much Behrooz! Truly appreciate it

Really wish I could have attended the GDC this year… do you know if any of the naughty dog presentations or power points will be available online after the conference?

My pleasure, anytime!
They have all the slides available for free, Also if you pay you get access to videos

Also Arne Meyer continues to share our internal slides and lectures online as show and tell of Naughtydog’s technologies.

Behrooz<-getting the art of Herge

Its the same price to get it to New Zealand, I think its too expensive for everyone. I hope it will be available from somewhere else. I have’nt searched Amazon today yet. but it was’nt there last time I checked a few weeks ago.

The Art in this game was very cool, I’d really like to see the Art Book.

Great thread, thanks ND Crew.

Behrooz,I can’t thank you enough for the awesome links and the small tut you did a few posts back! Not a lot of people can be arsed to share their workflow techniques!

Thanks man.

HP, Rendertastic website yourself! Glad you find them useful…I am grateful to Naughty dog and Sony, they are generous with their open policy encouraging us on sharing info.
I look at my tutorial and see all the shortcomings and missing info, will do better in the future.

Behrooz, thank you for sharing your tiling texture workflow techniques! It has been very helpful for school projects. I was wondering how you guys made some of the more complicated tiling textures, such as those that can’t be dropped on the canvas a couple of times like bricks or stones. Like wood, rock and some of the textures found in the Borneo level.

I have looked at your tutorials and the video one that uses Zbrush 2.0 to demonstrate this technique. For example, rocks; I would guess you guys sculpt it on a plane, but once you drop it on the canvas, you cannot let it touch the edges, or else it would get cut off. I can’t find a way around this problem. Any tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated =]

Thanks again! here are a couple of textures I have made using your technique:

Nah, its no free, Amazon charges US$12.49 = approx NZ$20, which is good if you can’t buy it anywhere else, and you can add a few titles if you dont go over a certain weight.

Juan, I am sure you know aboult Tilde (~)key? when you hold it down, you can offset(wrap)the canvas, that way bring your edges to the center area to make your textures continues.

Sculpt three to five individual pieces for variation and then lay them in the middle area of your layer and offset the objects(layer) to avoid edges until you get a desired look.

Another technique is to turn on brush menu’s wrapmode to sculpt.
"WrapMode: Values of WrapMode higher than 1 will be multiple copies of a stroke to be applied to a model at the same time. In some sense, it’s a generalization of bilateral or other symmetrical modeling techniques.

Wrap mode is normally best used with models that are symmetrical and simple in their rough form. A primary use is with planes, to permit quick production of tileable alphas from a plane mode (since a single brush stroke can be set to produce multiple strokes that preserve edge tileability, the amount of work required is reduced."

when I get some free time, I will make a rockwall tutorial … probably this weekend.

Yes, I have used the tilde key, but I have never really used the layer approach. I will give that a shot.

I’ve been using that laying multiple pieces technique to solve any harsh seem issue in the normal map, so I am glad I wasn’t very far off in that respect to how you guys do it =]

I guess it’s just about practice if anything then.

Thanks for the quick response Behrooz!

Behrooz, I would LOVE to see a rock wall tutorial whenever you get some free time from your busy schedule!

Yep, I would like to see it too. You promised!

Me too!
