Hi, just finished this pig. I toyed around with doing a high res render in Maya, but those SSS networks are hard as hell to set up. If anybody has a good tutorial to recommend, please do. Until then it’s zbrush renders and good ol’ photoshop. Thanks for looking!
Beautiful work.
Hmmm ) I like the style your creature was done with ) Detailing on level )
can i have a look at the topo? please… thanks man
Great character. Makes me think of something from a Hayao Myazaki film.
Looking Great… reminds me I must still finish my pig…
love it has a painterly look to it
Hey, thanks everyone for commenting!
@ Blue apple, awesome linos. A lot of these would be killer shirt designs. I really like the Viking piece.
@Ben - thanks, a huge compliment. A friend of mine pointed out it looks like the singer from motorhead. I knew I recognized it from somewhere…
@Tyrellcorp, I attached a shot of the main mesh at the lowest subd level. Is this what you want? I started it with zspheres, remeshed a couple of times, then finally retopo’d it. The eye sockets and eyebrows were added later and also retopod (started with regular spheres and zsketch), and the mouth and beard were just remeshed from a sphere and zsketch. I pretty much did the bare minimum to get the geo to do what I needed it to do : ). Feel free to ask follow ups.
Thanks!
Started with zspheres, BPR render, and some SSS faked in photoshop. Can’t remember the matcap name, but it’s great. I’ll track it down if there’s any interest. Thanks for looking!

Hey bud! Really great hand study. You used your own hand as reference?
That matcap also looks fun if you mind sharing.
Hey, yeah I definitely used my own hand as a reference. Just curious - how can you tell? Here’s a link to the page where I found the shader, RS_WaxCasting:

Just a guess.
I find it tough working from life. Reference photos seem a bit easier for me. Definitely gonna give it a try soon though.
Reference is critical. I took several photos of my own hand… pretty hard to model something I’m using!
Yeah, I’m not sure what it is. I find it easier to work from drawings or other peoples sculpts rather than life (as terrible a habit as that is).
You have got some pretty cool work. I can’t wait to see more.
Could you check out my friends work, He like to know what you think.
sure, got a link?
This is a short hard surface project. I used a lot of extract, clip curves, retopo and displacement for the pattern work. 3DSMax for the UVs and little mechanical details, and photoshop for the post. Thanks for looking!
woah! looks really cool!
Really looking forward to seeing the image! Where’d it go? Thumbnail looks awesome.
