A humble homage to Franics Bacon

Thanks a lot Etcher. You are so right about the Lynch feeling.
The more I worked on this Lynch sneaked into it, so in the end it’s not just about Bacon anymore, although he remains the initiator of this
That is the fascinating thing, though… all the various artists I like, Musicians, Composers, Painters, Writers and Directors in the end have something in common in their essence.

Anyway, my main project, a series I want to get started - is about a room which is a very ‘lynchian’ room as I mentioned earlierin onr of my other posts.
The room is pretty much set up and lit already in max and will accomodate various guests and situations. The Bacon scream here, will probably be on of the first guests

Bacon in his excellent paintings implies a completely different geometry, now we say topology. His paintings are not naturalistic. You know a Bacons early painting “crucifixion”? A good point to start.
But don’t misunderstand me, I like your post, its very interesting, keep posting.
:+1: :+1: :+1:

“Because that is what I am at core - a painter” Yeah, the same here.

Lynch, what Lynch has to do with Bacon? Kubrick’s “Clockwork Orange” maybe, maybe…

Update:
Lynch has said : " Francis Bacon is, for me, the main guy, the number one kinda hero painter. There’s a lot of painter’s that I like. But for just the thrill of standing in front of a painting… I saw Bacon’s show in the sixties at the Marlborough Gallery and it was one of the most powerful things I ever saw in my life. "

But IMO there isn’t any deep connection between these fine artists.

Yasu Michalis

I totally agree. My intention though wasn’t at all do do Bacon, or even try to copy his work. It was simply doing something of my own about him and at the same time paying tribute.

And about Lynch/Bacon - I must disagree  I do think they have a lot in common. Maybe not a first sight, but if you dig deeper you find what connects them.

Then again… I also find that Shostakovitch and Nine Inch Nails have something in common

Have a great day in Athens. A part of my heart is in Greece… on Crete actually.

Very interesting and beautifully work. As many others like bacon here i find he’s one of the best painters i’ve experienced and this leeds me to the question if you as a painter could explain some of the texturing or should i say painting you did on these pieces especially on the faces. It would be very interesting to know a little bit more about it.

@grfx there is nothing really fancy about the process. my goal was a 3d/2d mix look and to stay withing Zbrush for rendering while not using too many tricks and passes. I wanted to keep it simple.
I did some painting on his face, simultaneously in color and deformation. I also projected some details from Bacon paintings on the face, to throw into the mix. The painting was done rather over the top, as I knew I would later gently blend only pats of it over the face in Photoshop. In Zbrush I also used a mix of a weave displacement pattern the surface noise for the suit to get more of a soft thick fabric feel right away.

btw, talking about paint texture: Already for years I got into the habit of doing most of my paintings on the rough none gessoed back of the canvas, because it gives the paint a certain soft and yet rough texture. Later on I got a Book with an Interview Collection with Bacon, where he described that he at some point started to do his paintings on the back of the canvas

here’s a sheet with samples of the render passes I used. nothing spectacular really. for the chair I actually used only the outline render in the final and painted it.

Thanks for sharing more images. It’s a very good homage i think. The interview book with David Sylvester.Good book about art its been a while that i havent looked inside. Thanks again

You are welcome. Yes , exactly, it’s the one of David Sylvester.

I love Francis Bacon,I love your tribute,it´s a great idea!!! wonderful!!! I´m looking for a fusion classical paint-3D (I love paint: I´m a painter) and you give me a lot of inspiration… thanks!

sorry my English.

Thank you Cornelius

Yes julian_k, well well done. Especially the two details. :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:
I tried too you know, you managed a very interesting approach in bacon’s geometry (if there is such a thing).

You’re making such impressive and interesting progress Julian :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Have you noticed the cool effect that happens when you quickly scroll down the previous page of this thread? Your portraits of Bacon flicker and morph into each other.

I think that’d make for an intense video/animation. Maybe give the whole thing a grungy aged dreamlike effect? Just an idea.

Fantastic work man!

@Michalis: Thanks a lot. It was actually what you had mentioned in regard to Bacon Geometry that was an impulse to give it a shot.

@Eric:Glad you like it. I couldn’t quite see the scrolling effect, but did you imagine something along this gif here ?

Cool new one! I did get a bit of the scrolling effect Eric suggested. The animated Gif is great! :+1: .

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about! Very cool Julian. I think that animation/morph effect complements your work very well.

Man, your mixed media artwork on your site is beautiful. The Joker, The Pope & his Wife piece is gorgeous. :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

hey, I with my animator eyes can see a nosferatu by doing that (max schreck). Thanks

Thanks you very much Etcher.

Thanks for checking out the paintings Eric. The longer I work digital the more I apprechiate how you are never stopped from memory errors, crashes etc… when doing a painting on canvas. when you are inspired and in the flow, nothing stops you there

Thanks Cherub. I don’t quite see the Nosferatu, but you are very welcome to it. Always loved Nosferatu ever since my childhood  The Vampire Myth seems to never loose its fascination.

Hey Julian_K, I may spoil your thread, so sorry if this is the case, but its because of this thread is that I posted this. Please have a look.
