T-Recks

That is one wicked reptile.

Here is another update on how the scales are going. Also thank you to Stefanuto for your alpha maps. I’ve only used 2 of them so far and I mostly sculpted all these scales by hand, but your alphas are going to be incorporated in here somewhere.

I love these sculpts man ! Great work !

Any chance you could share that red matcap in the previous post? Really dig it.

It’s actually in the Zbrush matcap library. You can find it under earthtones and the title of the matcap is hardstyle.

Hey guys I’m pretty much done with the head for now. I am now focusing on the body and I’m fine with the proportions, but I really need to improve the skeleton structure on him. I would really appreciate it if someone could perhaps do a paint over for me. I’ve looked at several tyrannosaur references, but I just can’t nail it. Maybe if someone could help me understand the skeletal structure of the tyrannosaur more then I could do a better job at getting it done. Here is some work I’ve done on the shoulder bone and the chest plate.

i think im seeing a couple of things that might be throwing ya off. looks like your neck is a bit too thick. the head area looks nice. also looks like the pubic region is hanging a little too low and the legs are a bit too thick. they look like they are the right length tho. from a stylistic point everything looks really cool and it kinda reminds me more of the dinos from king kong which is pretty sweet. if ya look up a book by dougal dixon called the complete book of dinosaurs, there is a really good side view of a tyranosaurus on the cover. hope this helps:D

Hey everyone it’s about time I at least get the head done sculpted so is there anyway that would get these scales to get moving along faster? I’ve tried alpha maps, but they don’t look as good as actually doing the scales by hand. I’m a perfectionist which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Please if you have any tips on how I can achieve awesome scales in a small amount of time please let me know.

I still need help with this issue so if anyone could help me out that would be great.

Honestly, the answer to your question is you gotta do em all by hand. It’s part of the fun of zbrush
I like the design btw.

if ya wanna speed up the scales, ya might wanna try the planks brush. its pretty handy for doing large areas with a good alpha. play with the settings on the stroke. the mouse avg will help fine tune it to what you need it to do.

Update!

Oh god, doing scales by hand would do your head it. Hey Loki, I like your suggestion with the planks brush. I quickly tried it with basic alphas and it turned out ok. I guess the more you play with the alphas and settings the better results you’ll get.

Here is a front view. Please feel free to critique.

You’re off to a hell of a start dude! Man, looks like the t-rex from king kong got together with the 1998 Godzilla and had a scary awesome baby.

My only suggestion would be to work the whole piece as you go…not saying block in the scales and refine them as you go, because you’ll go crazy, but just the major forms, skin folds, big protrusions, that sort of thing. This isn’t a “set in stone” rule, but something I find useful, especially on a creature piece like this. I also usually find that the underlying structure does a good job of dictating where and how the scales end up laying across the body.

On that same note, I’d start working detail in all over his body as well–you don’t want to detail in his nose, then work your way back to his tail, then look back and realize your scales should have been 35% bigger! Not that you won’t see whats going on before you get there, but again it’s generally a good idea to work the model to make sure everything reads “big picture” first, then when you’re comfortable with that, plink in the little stuff.

I said I’d throw around my 2 cents, but I think that was just one really winded cent. I owe you another penny some time!

ps–I don’t know how many different ways i can work dudeman into my replies, but by god i’m going to keep trying–

Veeeeery nice! :+1:
But the big scratches on his head look like the stitches.

Nice. T-Rex meets Deatwing and Gozilla ^^

I saw in one pic that u are at around 15 mio polys.
How much will it bee in the end?
U don´t use HD Geometry?

What is your limit in Normal Geometry (Computer)
I ask because mine is around 21Mio and i ask myself if this is a good amount.
It is often a problem when I am over 6Mio and can´t devide again.

(sry 4 bad english)
thx 4 answer

Here is an update. I am currently focusing my attention on the leg. The arms and tail have yet to be dealt with so don’t bother critiquing those yet. I mainly want crits on the head and leg so far. I’m really aiming for top row with this thing and if anyone has some suggestions that will bring this sculpt to that level I would appreciate it. Without any further ado here is where I’m at.

[T-Recks leg update.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘239810’,‘T-Recks%20leg%20update.jpg’,1,0))

I would say …if you don´t mind.

I not a pro but i think the main emphasis schould be more over the hips.

He has a massiv head and a big tail but the area in the middle seems a little bit to small.

Its a little bit like the baby godzillas in the (roland emmerich) godzillamovie.

Baby animals an half grown have bigger heads compared to their body.
:o

But that is just my little opinion… (fast PS streching)

I just want to help you its really a great model especially the head!:+1:

The head is almost done everyone! Hopefully by the time I am done with the entire sculpt it will make it to the top row. I hope you all enjoy this awesome update. I have refined many areas on the dinosaur as well as adding more scales to the top of the head.
