Awesome!

Have you gotten to the face yet? It seems to lack detail compared to the (awesome) snakes.
No mate, no work on face yet. Just got snakes on there and started trying to blend them in.
The patience thing… me neither. That was why I cheated and did only one : ) But I need to work each snake and yes by snake 17 I’m sure I will be pullling hair out. Or it will be just falling out on it’s own! Can you imagine painting every snake from scratch, and there is no symmetry tool on each snake, so no just doing half. Nightmare!!! It would take forever.
Well, I new this would be crazy but…
Ok, having worked this a bit, and because of the linear workFlow, I need to reDo it right back to the base snake. The snake UV’s are too small to take a texture and I really want to paint this. Besides, there are a few areas lacking geometry and I can afford to add a “few” faces. Plus, I would like to try a few different snake designs, so any ideas, comments, suggestions would really be helpful.
Thanks.

the only thing i would roast you about is why do your snakes have to look so freakin good!? that looks like it was quite the labor of love. i would have cried mid-way through i think.
I like it a lot.
Some random thoughts…
The face seems a little flat? Perhaps elongated a bit? Even with the snakes it’s still the focal point of the figure. The shape of the eyes is good and I like the lips. Her teeth need something though. Maybe some pointy ones, or knock a few out? Damn I love ths shape of the snake head. It might be cool to work some scales down onto the parts of the face.
BTW, If you want something to be roasted over I think you’re going to have model a BBQ pit.
gr8 work man! its getting insane with every post. :o
but yes u may need sum diff snakes sticking out also. perhaps sum smaller n thinner ones in the front(like small hir strands) and really long and thick ones on the back. persnally i’d also add more details on the under eye lid.
neverthelss gr8 work.
happy medusing!!
I like. Excellent solution on the forehead, back and shoulders. Hmm… she doesn’t have abnormal teeth. Guess even she can’t suck blood from the stones she makes…
At this detail would be a nightmarish lost-wax mould, but totally cool as jewelry!
Newbie Q:
Do these facial features add a ton of polys at level 5? Theoretically, could you get level 6 detail to render if you used the skull as a snake base (fewest polys possible. skull top only, no features)? Then detail the skull separately, and join (group?) them later? Like giving her a snake wig?
Or, snake half-wigs, since their bases don’t seem to cross a centerline, side-to-side… render 2 topsides and a head?
Thaaaaaank you. That’s what I am looking for.
Not sexy? Agreed, lol, how do I make her more sexy? I am a bit new to trying human faces and perfect females seem most boring as there is no detail. No wrinkles, or warts or anything. Guess I could just try a different basic shape for face? Poutty lips… was going to go other way and make her hideous!
Face got a bit flat with morph to mouth open. Agreed also on teeth. As an after thought I had stuck two planes in her mouth and so basically the teeth are modeled from a plane… which is just dumb on my part. When I dump it out of here back to Maya I will put in a real set of teeth. So what, rotted gums and yellow/brown teeth : )
What to put under eyeLid. I use alot of pics as reference but they are all airbrushed I guess for magazines. No wrinkles on younger women. I think I need to age her and add alot more detail. I will try a few looks.
And yes… this is level 6, 3.2 million polys. Still not enough on snakes really but that is it. There are just too many (22) and they really chew up alot of geometry no matter how you look at it : ) Plus in final render they are reasonably small.
Yup, I could easily tear off snakes, leave an overlap and do in pieces. But the way the math works out… two halves of snakes. They are around 2 mil and even that would make 8 (not doable) at level 7. If I ripped them in half, yes, I guess I could go up one more level for purpose of detail and Displacementmap generation.
These just ZB problems. Sort of been doing two versions. One to try and get back to Maya, one just for a bust in here.
Thanks for suggestions, back after I try some of them.
Hey, I disagree! I liked the fact she had no wrinkles. I’ve got the Ray Harryhausen hag version in mind, (Clash of the Titans) so a younger version is like a backstory. The challenge is: how do you portray evil or fury or demonic power without looking like a hag? I mean, Medusa must have been young once.
LOL-- actually I responed at an emotional level, because she looks like my sister-in-law on a rant!
The snakes you modelled are beautiful, and obviously poisonous. I was toying with the idea of posting a request to try coral snakes. No pit viper head, just a shape at both ends that would make it appear like very thick strands of hair.
And, because they are identified by color (“Red-on-yellow; kill a fellow…”) she’d have hair that would make anybody take a look-- and turn to stone doing it. Also, you could render more of them, as the scales are less pronounced. Just a variation… there are probably toxic vine snakes or whip snakes that are even better for use as hair…
Actually, I was more intrigued with the L6 problem you had-- I’m gonna need a solution to the same, as soon as I start assembling multi-person scenes in 2.5d.
Keep going, this is getting somewhere!
i would like to see her, young sexi, angry and with snakes that will kill you, now thats what i will call a medusa :] something like this http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showpost.php?p=243396&postcount=2 or like this http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showpost.php?p=248886&postcount=1 but whit snakes in on her :]
Haha
Slocik - Sure, send me links to the best looking stuff why don’t you. Dude, those are killer models, lol… setting the bar pretty high here aren’t we? I love the girl with flowers in hair, so peaceful. Seb has really nice models. She would be cool too with snakes : ) And the texture on that bald girl is beautiful. Whew.
Ok, will give coral snake’s a try. I agree might look more like hair too. Liked the pitViper but want to try other stuff too. Made a few snake designs now, but I haven’t generated any displacement maps yet. Still playing with ideas… but I will post some snakes soon for an opinion before I project them again.
Davinci… if you look close at the first few pics and the last pic, I solved the L6 problem. Those snakes are pretty crisp. I was able to project the map at full resolution (3.4 million polys).
The way was to HIDE big chunks of the geometry. I made a bunch of black and white masks in photoshop to mask off the head, and part of snakes. I went to level 6, and loaded masks, and hide all the snakes but 4. Then it did displacement EASY. Hid those snakes, unhid four more, applied dispmap, etc, etc until all the snakes were done. Worked like a charm. Make sense? Just make sure to type in same number each time for displacement.
Thanks for input and ideas, suggestions. It really does help.
Cheers.
Yes, your snakes are crazy good. Thanks for the workflow tips.
Sorry : ) Did I say my snakes were good? I would never say that. I meant the actual “displacement” was super crisp.
But I am honing in on a new snake design, trying a coral snake. Grabbed some reference pics, have to finish base snake (almost done) and then copy it around etc.
But the pit viper was soooo cool, lol.
No problem on tips… I’m just flying by the seat of my pants anyhow. I was glad it finally worked as the higher the res, the crisper it looks : )
Cheers
So what are yooouuuuuuuuuu making?
okay, so try reeeeeeeeeally thin pit vipers-- hey! a new species: 3ddudesnake!
You dudes are waaaay ahead of me. I’m still working on ZSphere primitives and custom alpha exp’s. I come from 2D-land, lookng for a way around copyright restrictions in advertising.
For what I (think I) need, ZB is king.
No, I like the coral snake idea and already modeled one (will post soon).
It is just slow going because this time I am trying to do it right, and everything boils back to square one - the snake. When I am happy, I have to dump base mesh back over (it gets too distorted from original) and then hook it up into all the others. Plus I have been trying to get a grip on the painting texture part in ZB and I have been doing some tests on that other model I posted.
The first model I did in a few hours, the whole thing, but it was just thrown together. Since I liked how it was going I decided to make it that I could actually get it out of here and back to Maya.
Coral head Medusa will be done soon as a first pass. Hope you check back to critique : )
Yah, ZB is awesome. A few issues maybe but a really unique piece of software.
Cheers.
Now that’s a control this noob hadn’t considered. Thanks!
I’ll be interested to see the Coral head-- happy ZBing.
Hey,
Yah, it is even scarier than that. For example… I want to animate this SOMEDAY, and so I skinned one snake and saved file and imported it a bunch of times and position on head. Then, if BASE snake changes I can just import the OBJ file and morph it onto ALLLLLLL the other snakes and bingo. New snake design.
As for exporting base OBJ again… that is trick I read on here or in Practical Guide. Not my idea or anything : ) I do it because I am not doing enough initial detail, or planning. I just want to get into ZBrush so bad, and I end up doing alot of stuff that you likely shouldn’t, and I just distort the mesh too much away from the original obj. Cool part is you can always morph the new one into the original if you went ahead and skinned it or whatever to save what you did.
Back soon with snake, made SEVERAL new ones but damn coral snakes have such tiny features and scales I need more POLYS!!! Lol.
lol-- yeah, I wasn’t wishing a science illustration on ya, just color and head shape to fix your original memory problem with pit vipers! lol. Good fun hacking, huh? lol.
Forget scales-- just give them some flakey bark like the 3D animations of hair shafts in shampoo commercials! Medusa with “the heartbreak of psoriasis.” She always has a bad hair day.
