ODST wip

So I’ve decided that I want the new Rifle called the “Designated Marksman Rifle” aka the ‘DMR’ that will be in Halo Reach, on my character.

As well, I think I am going to go with 3 poses. That way I can focus on different aspects of either the design, or the expression.

Here are some Grenades, Ammo Clips, a Gun Sling, the DMR (it may cover too much in this pose, but other poses will leave the back clear), A knife, and an extra piece of armor for the Right Arm to compensate for the missing asymmetrical element.

here are the 4 main passes that I’ve made so far, I need to recreate the masks for each piece and reassemble the passes. (like in the Orange colored pic from earlier)

Need to remake the Visor. And I need to come up with a good composite for the guns and one for the knife.

Continually refining this pose. Still thinking of possibilities for the other two poses.

And I am waiting for some more info on the DMR so I can more accurately recreate it.

I’ve got the Form, I’ve got good design and pattern. However I am still lacking in texture.

EDIT: I just went through this thread backwards. Thinking about how I felt about the quality with each post I made. And I have to say, Thank you! Everyone that has posted, giving me critiques, motivation, or suggestions. I was thinking pretty high of myself back with my first few posts, but this character has come a long way. And I can tell there is a long way to go still, but I am just really excited to see and feel the improvements that have come from spot on critiques.

I’ve been redrawing the masks and doing some photoshoping over in order to determine a better design for the color and patterns.
Still needs a lot of tweaks.

I would love to get some comments on this latest image. Its more cartoony than I think it should be.

I like the blue you have, the orange is contrasty but i dont think its the right hue. Try maybe more yellow? It might look cool with the blue, that or darken up the reds? Just some suggestions. Great job so far, keep it up your really progressing.

Ok so its been a month. Work got the better of me.

I am still making some progress. Mostly been trying to find the most sane way to maintain control while being efficient with my time.

The Gun on the Character is a proxy mesh, I had since refined the model as will be apparent in the turntable vids below.

I have been painting RGB color masks that I will use to control the distribution of different mixes of Shaders in After Effects.

It came through much darker on youtube than I intended. But its a good thing to note for the future.

I’ve also been modeling the ‘DMR’ which is the Rifle on the character’s back. That has been entirely in Maya, so not really Zbrush related.

Things are looking up though. But I feel like I need to be more diligent in order to keep motivation and creativity up.

I did a breakdown the other day. I will have somewhere around 30 different render passes. 2 mb a frame at 720x960. I am looking at somewhere between 15 & 140 gb worth of image frames for 2 minutes of footage. Its really up in the air as to how efficient PNG is.

140gb for 2 minutes?

30 renders passes x 30 fps x 120 seconds at 960x720 resolution TIF.

But I have been using bridge to convert them down with no perceivable loss.
2500 frames came out at around 500 mb.

Many of the passes will just be black and white masks for objects

Its been forever since I posted any updates.
I’ve just been painting some masks for the character and doing some compositing in After Effects.

Unfortunately there are a ton of errors with my model that I simply wont be able to fix. Not enough time. Motivation is low, want to try something completely different.

The last render looks sweet. Havent played odst yet but it looks very halo.
