Brush strokes more "segmented" now in 3.5? (See page 5 for more information)

I just installed the R3 here at work expecting this lag on the stroke to be fixed by now. Sadly it is not.
I used the R2 three times and closed it down for good. Was kinda excited with the new release, but meh…
Here’s a image to compare zBrush 3.1 to 3.5 R3. Same machine, same brush, and lots of difference.

Back to 3.1… :frowning:

In the release vid, it says something about “added a brush control for faster or slower sampling”

That sounds like something to look into for this. I’m on mac so I can’t look into it, but it caught my attention in hopes that it was an answer for fast sculpting.

I assume that is the new “Fast Samples” function in Brush> Samples. It is disabled by default with the Standard brush, you have to move the sample radius slider a bit to enable it.

In either event, the only effect I was able to coax from this was “bad” vs. “Slightly Less Bad”. We need some sort of control over spacing, not sampling, like with the lazy mouse.

The only thing Ive been able to do that made any meaningful difference, was to crank the “Preferences> Performance > Mouse and Tablet Samples” all the way from 100 to 1000, and this really produces a modest increase in quality. Still nothing to compare to 3.1.

I did that too but I still have to draw slower to get the same stroke quality I get from 3.1…

Try this:

activate lazy mouse
set lazy step to just above 0, not 0 cuz it will be dotty for whatever reason
set the radius to 1
set the lazy smooth to 1

This makes for a perfectly smooth stroke for me on OSX 3.2, even in dot stroke mode.
Hopefully, they resolved the lazy mouse issues so you can use it without worry.

It did work…
For about 2 minutes.
Then I tried with ClayTubes.
BUM.
Zbrush’s gone…
Crashed without saying goodbye…

Oh Zbrush…
You hurt my feelings acting like this…

Wow I’m starting to way less impressed with r3 by the minute. What is up with the dotted strokes. If I wanted that I’d use Mudbox.

Ahhh, but it does work for the standard brush, right? Hey that’s one down. It will not have the same result with other brushes, haven’t tried them all though. Try out the standard brush w/ a square alpha and a lower intensity. It won’t have the flattening properties of the clay tubes, but will have that sharp, natural media look.

For the standard brush, that’s still a trick worth keeping up your sleeve. It pretty much eliminates the dots with the most important brush in the palette. Not too shabby.

I’ve said many times that a simple brush spacing slider is needed. It must have something to do with performance, as I’m sure they’ve taken note of our many requests.

Having the spacing controlled by velocity instead must be to prevent lag and other issues.

This is something I’ve noticed too.

In addition I’ve noticed dotting in Quicksketch.

Was trying to replicate what the new demo movie was doing at the beginning, where the car is being sketched out and it kept dotting/segmenting. I simply could not reproduce what they were doing in the movie.

WinXP Sp3, 3 gigs of ram.

I had no other programs open. Using a Cintiq with latest drivers.

The lazy mouse workflow worked on R2, but it caused lots of random freezes. I don’t have R3 yet, but I’m hoping that they resolved this issue.

The only fix for doted strokes has always been lazy mouse set to really low or very slow strokes.

I never had perfect stroke even in 3.1, had to use lazy mouse.

ZBrush 3.5 brushes are different, ‘smarter’, and more accurate than 3.1. There are many modifiers that controls the behavior of the brushes in 3.5R3, please experiment with these modifiers and you will find the settings that works best for you.

Meanwhile, you may want to try the following steps…

1. Download the brush file included in this post. Extract the zip content and place it in the ZStartup/BrushPresets folder.

2. Launch ZBrush

3. Set ‘Preferences/Performance/Mouse And Tablet Samples’ to 1000. Press CTRL+SHIFT+I to store the preferences file.

4. Press ‘B’ and select the ‘Standard31’ brush.

5. Test the brush.

^Made no difference to me, same old spaced out ‘dotty’ brush unless I draw very slowly…

For me too! I tried every slider in brush (and some in preferences) section and nothing helped. I agree thet brushes become more smart but they slow down sculpting vastly. Segmented strokes are really critical for dam_standard brush

thanks ! it’s work great same like 3.1

I’m so glad there is an explaination of this. Also a solution.

Does Dam Standard work in 3.5 r3?

Yes, it works similar to 3.1, but without Lazy mouse give more “doted” result (or you must paint strokes much more slowly). It seems that all brushes must be in Lazy mouse mode with settings like in Post#25.

Yep, it did work! Thanks support ;D

heres a macro of the lazymouse settings

Now we’re talkin’, this is good stuff. Looking forward to the new version! :+1:
