3D mouse Spacenavigator

iisamii Maybe this is our solution temporary
Hi guys,
I just want to let you know, there is an “old” Version of 3d Connexion Software.
It is a Beta Version, but it helps very well, because it has a Macro for Zbrush, so you can navigate, rotate, zoom and so on.
New: Experimental profile for Pixologic ZBrush 4;

Visit 3dconnexion site or search for 3DxWare 10 Beta 64-bit (Graduated) or the 32 bit Version.

so has anyone tired this yet?
does it work?

thats nice to see I guess. Sad it’s been years and still not support for this. I’m more or less dropping all 3d programs that do not give 3d mouse support. Not because I’m picky, but because I’ve recently started to suffer from RSI from doing 3d all day. Literally every 3d program without a 3d mouse puts all the strain on your right hand. Even a keyboard shortcut that allows to rotate around the model freely with the left is better than what we have now. Sad.

Dive, do you use a drawing tablet?

yup I use a tablet, in my right hand. The 3d mouse is not a replacement for a mouse, it is a 40 key programable keyboard/3d mouse you use simultaneously in your left hand while you use the wacom in the right. For polymodeling, this totally eliminated my RSI/ made me faster/made me better at modeling because you can simultaneously roll/tilt/zoom/pan/tweek the model with both hands… the best metaphor that marketing uses is “its like holding an apple in your left hand and skinning it with a knife in your right hand” (assuming you are right handed). For maya, this completely takes of the load on your right hand, it better distributes the activity required onto both. Combined with the natural ergonomics of a pen tablet in the right, there is no strain whatsoever.

Mudbox and 3d coat may have supported it quickly because they actually have “standard” 3d data that 3d connexions drivers can interface with. Zbrush doesn’t have real 3d data, so I suspect it might be much harder. Nevertheless, if I can’t find a work around I’m going to use zbrush a lot less. I love the program, but I love not having RSI a tad bit more.

I have never used the space mouse but it sounds intriguing and support for it would be nice. Personally I use a Logitech G 13 for my left hand in combination with a wacom. Yup. A game controller and I use it for all of my graphics applications. Common keys like shift, ctrl, alt. I used to have issues with my left hand using the Nostromo game pad but none with the G 13. If say a module in a program requires a separate set of commands you can create them easily and access them easily as well. There are three different command phases you can access for each profile you create. That gives you 75 programmable keys. All is not lost. If you got one you could use it for Zbrush and/or even Gaming and keep the space mouse for other applications. Anyway, hang in there:+1:

3D mouse yes please.

I dream the day I could half the clicks load on my poor right wrist when ZBrushing!

It’s not make or break for me but I would love to have 3D mouse support in zbrush.

Of course I hear once I try a 3D mouse it quickly becomes make or break…

Yes, I would also like to use my 3dconnexion with zbrush.

I recently bought a 3d mouse from 3dconnexion hoping to use with ZBrush until to my dismay I find out it is not supported. Can you please, support it?

please support that awesome device :frowning:

Id also really like to have support for the 3D Mouse please! Works with all my workflow but ZBrush.
So please create long needed support!

Wow…this tread is so old im shocked at Pixo not being on board for this
3D-Coat and Mudbox has it why not Zbrush…

Probably because ZBrush is a 2,5D program. I guess this could change when ever Zb5 finally arrives. Still I’m sure 3d mouse support could have been hacked in, it’s probably a bit harder than doing it for other 3d applications though.
So far the two companies have focused on blaming each other for the lack of support. In the end I think it’s just complicated enough and there are so few 3d mouse using zbrushers that they figured it’s not worth the effort.

Hi all,

I’m absolutely in love with Zbrush. It is brilliant tool and I can’t imagine my work flow without it. Zbrush was a bit hard to learn after Software like Maya, Mudbox, 3d max because of its unorthodox approach to certain areas of 3D. That makes Zbrush unique and powerful. I was shocked how my slow computer back then, could handle models up to 10 million polygons without using GPU. But Mudbox crushed my system even on around 500k polygons because of my weak Graphic card.

I have noticed the trick Zbrush using to handle high poly models, they step back on subdivisions when you move around your model. As a test I have deleted low subdivisions and witnessed instant degradation of the view port performance.
This little trick made Zbrush stand out, but now it is kicking back. If subdivisions go down while you move around your model, it makes Move and sculpt impossible. That probably why it is not that easy to implement 3D mouse in to Zbrush. The software In which I need 3D mouse functionalities the most.

Now I have GTX980TI and it makes me sad thinking that 5632 GFlops of computing power just collecting dust, while 112 GFlops CPU sweating like pig, when I work in zbrush. I hope in Version 5R0 you will start using GPU because graphics card prices and power are amazing now and with NVidia upcoming Paschal and Volta series (2016,2017) with up to 32GB Video Ram and x10 faster than even GTX980Ti and Volta x70 faster in 2017, Using CPU for rendering or view port will be a ticket to stone age.

Dear Pixologic you started this race as a leader and it remained that way for a while. Companies looking for timesavers and 3D mouse Is one of those. Zbrush cost 700$. Good tools and hardware can save you hours which can be converted in to thousands of Dollars. Companies hire flexible artist, so it will cost us nothing to change software. Will it cost you?

I love Zbrush so please look in to it.

@beneath_the_surface Yes but it only works with Windows right? Is there any work-around to get a 3D mouse (ANY 3D mouse!) to work with Mac?

+1 for 3D Mouse for ZB5

I’ll go further: I first started looking at ZBrush over a year ago. The lack of 3Dmouse support was directly responsible for me not even bothering to download the free trial until now.

I’ve discovered that not only do I not get on with any of the three 2D mouse navigation methods, but ZBrush resists attempts to work around it by using programmable keys on my gaming keyboard.
e.g. I can create a ‘Pan’ key, but as soon as I release the key, ZBrush jumps to a completely different pan and zoom.

Rather than continue to fight this, I have decided that I was right the first time - it’s not even worth trialling software that doesn’t support the 3D mouse.

Got mine Space Navigator today and looked forward to start using zBrush more as I have problems with the navigation, this would help. And now when I started zBrush it does not work. Sorry zBrush, I am going for mudbox instead. It’s like buying a sportscar and find out that there is a eco motor in it.

I use my 3D Spacenavigator with 3DSMAX and Rhino. There is no better way to navigate 3Dspace than the Spacenavigator product. It is revolutionary for me. It is easy, two handed bliss for a 3D artist like myself. It has increased my productivity by a 100 times and I am not sure why more aren’t getting that. When I move to Zbrush I am slowed down by not being able to use my Spacenavigator. It pisses me off that such great companies don’t get it. It astounds me. I want to be heard. Try the Space Navigator and you will never go back.

Since my next project involves sculpting, I dropped in to see if there was a new version of ZBrush since last year.

Finding that there isn’t, and that there is therefore still no 3D mouse support, I am leaving again.

This isn’t a mere convenience - I literally will not buy this software until 3D mouse support is added.

For better or worse, any sculpting will have to be done in Modo.
